This match was played during the 1974 power crisis. According to one article on Wiki this ended on 7th March so this match may have been played just after some restrictions were lifted.

Anyway, for this match I have a standard Crewe, 16 page, match programme, cover price 6p and also a 20p single sheet which was produced instead of the full programme during the crisis. All dates, players, officials are the same for both.

I can only think that if some restrictions were lifted on 7th March then Crewe rushed out a full programme having already produced the single sheet.

Out of curiosity can any member provide information on the above or did some clubs continued to produce a limited number of full programmes during the power crisis.

Was the game played on a Sunday? If so it could be that the teamsheet was used for admission. I think (and don't quote me) that clubs could not charge admission fees for a game on a Sunday so got around it by producing a teamsheet that was purchased on entrance to the ground.

Quite right Wolfy, they were known as "Sunday Teamsheets."

There are many such teamsheets around for 1974, where a full match programme was also issued. The teamsheets are usually not as plentiful and are very collectible.

This was still happening up until the early 1980s too, where clubs needed to "sell" a team sheet on the turnstiles to allow them to take admission monies on a Sunday.

I think Feb 1983 was the last such instance I encountered them for Newport County, when we played Brentford on a Sunday.

I have a couple for Pompey from that season. I think the clubs hoped to get higher attendances to compensate for not being able to use floodlights so having to play mid-week games in the afternoon. It seems to have worked, v Orient FA cup 4 Sunday 32800, v Sheff Wed Wednesday afternoon, 8670.
It was supposedly illegal to charge admission on Sundays so a team sheet was sold at the usual admission price, apparently there was a free turnstyle somewhere, but I never discovered where it was!

Yes the match was played on a Sunday so the above replies clarify the reasons for the two "programmes".

Many thanks for the quick replies.

"Sunday teamsheets" - something to do with the law and what constituted an entry fee.

The 73/4 Coventry v Derby match has a very small (roughly 5" x 3") teamsheet but printed in several different colours. I only own the sky blue one as you have to draw the line somewhere Smile

Wasn't the first Sunday league game at Cambridge that season? I've got the programme but there was no separate teamsheet with it. Hereford may have been the opponents, I forget.

Stoke City played Chelsea on Sunday, January 27th and no admission money was taken , due to the law, but also I believe the ground was built on Church land. The way round it was to issue a single sheet and this was your admission. At Stoke there were different colours for different parts of the ground and mine was 55p for the home end. Strangely , two years earlier I paid only 60p for a Wembley ticket to see Stoke City beat Chelsea in the League Cup final. Incidentally, it was the match I introduced my son to watch my team and were rewarded with a late penalty by Geoff Hurst giving us a 1-0 win.

Time does strange things!! Stoke beat Chelsea 2-1 and old George Eastham got the winner. Shocked

I was at the Everton - WBA FAC 4th rd match on Sunday 27th Jan 1974. I recall quite a few games were played that day, incl Nott Forest ? Admission at Goodison was by programme - which I still have.

Newport County played on Sunday 27th Jan 1974 as well, beating Exeter City 2-1 at Somerton Park in the Fourth Division.

County had played at home the previous Sunday (20th) too - and beat Merthyr Tydfil (featuring the great John Charles) 1-0 in the Welsh Cup - thanks to a hotly-disputed goal when Harold Jarman smashed his penalty against the crossbar before heading in the rebound.

The Merthyr players were furious, claiming the goal couldn't stand because Jarman had in effect touched the ball twice - the referee allowed the goal though believing that the goalie had got his fingertips to the original shot against the bar.

Entrance to both games was via the match programme, which was priced at 50p instead of the usual 6p.
