Is there a number under 'patent'? Have you tried googling the patent number? If that is what I can see?

Possibly A money clip?

A strong paper clip?

googled 'the wedge patent 1909' and it explains it is a wedge expanding device....whatever that is !

Google shows a few other 'wedge' clips too. It seems/looks like some sort of clothing pin, in my opinion. So, tie pin was close, but maybe more for a lapel or some other clothing attachment?
