What would you do?

Thought I'd ask for opinions on something I've been mulling over for a while and struggling to make a decision on.

I've been offered a rare programme (rugby, not football), that I'm very keen on. Trouble is, it's an ex-bound one, and has for some inexplicable reason been trimmed, quite significantly: something like a quarter inch on the long side, to the extent that there is text missing. Condition is otherwise good.

What would you do? Do I wait for a good condition one to come up and take my chances-it's rare, but very collectible, so I'm sure it'll re-surface again; or do I pick this up, possibly just as a filler? And then the bigger question: how much?? As a ball park, I reckon about a grand for one in decent nick; so what would this be worth?

Any thoughts, opinions or advice appreciated.

Personally I would wait until the acceptable one came along. It would irratate me that I had something not fully to my liking in my collection.
Only my opinion I'm sure there will be others who will think the opposite.

I always draw the line at programmes with 'bits' missing and in this instance, with a sizeable strip removed, resulting in loss of text as well, it would be a no-no from me.

You'd probably still have to pay a fair amount as well so it would probably be better to wait for a decent copy.

Unless of course you can get this one for peanuts and as you say use it as a filler for now.

I have never had a problem with "fillers" especially some of the hard to get friendlies but would expect to be paying peanuts for it if there is text missing...

One of the things that will keep me collecting is once I have got all the ones I can sensibly acquire I will start to look for replacements for those that a re substandard...

I have never minded team changes....but would prefer not to have anything written on the cover...

My view is if you want it and can afford it then buy it.


Another one may come along but if it doesn't you will kick yourself for letting this one pass you by.

Obviously I would expect the price to match the condition.

If you know what the text is that is missing you could always get in touch with Eammon at programme preservation to see what he could do for you .......... ??????

Some programmes were trimmed to fit in the binders. If this is the case then any more coming on to the market could be in the same condition unless you are lucky enough to find a nice unbound copy.................

Difficult choice, but as said above price matters but also the rarity needs to be taken into account.

I have a few programmes that need repairing I don't want to try it myself
as it will look botched.
Is there anyone on here who can do a good job?
It's mainly splits to spines on three and a ripped inside page on one.
Would work like this be pricey?

He will also give you an indication of price before he starts if you wish.

Yes it is one of my standard lines, where there is one, then there is 2-usually accurate as far as the items I have applied it too BUT there are situations where this may not always be the case and as has been pointed out already by other members, then if it can be obtained at a lower price due to having some text missing then I would consider to go for it as you if u ever find another one and you paid the right price for this one then sell it on at a competitive rate.

If it is that rare an item then buy as it's better than it nagging at you for years later!

Good question. Personally I don't go for fillers in my collection. I only buy a item with which I am happy with the quality. That is not to say that everything I have is in perfect nick but I am happy with the faults and once I have it I move on. Of course if a lot better quality one becomes available at a suitable price then I would likely buy and sell on my lower quality copy. However I no longer actively seek out the item.

So if it was me then you need to ask the question that given its rarity and age (if older item) then are you happy with it in your collection in that condition ?

If you just keep thinking about how and when and how much it will cost to replace it, then don't bother ....except if it a real bargain.

But if you buy a filler then you also should think about resale value because in fact that is your ultimate goal. As no point losing wads of money for something you don't want to keep anyway.

The Wimbledon 1922 was mine which he done a fantastic job on. I have since sold the programme but I think the new owner would have been happy It was in a dire state when I got it.
