Does anyone have any information regarding possible secret messages in wartime programmes? I currently have a November 1945 programme from a game played at the Lane between arsenal and Plymouth which made me suspicious! I know that the war was finished by then but it is a one sheet effort and on the back are a number of stories alluding to fans in Singapore, Denmark and others. Bizzarely the last story talks of a German U Boat commander looking for his family in Hamburg!!

Well we have known for years that they used to put messages in the newspapers so why not programmes? Anyway why would anyone want to support the arse in the first place, highly suspicious. Laughing

I think the only codes in publicatiosn during the war (Uncle Albert) were in crossword puzzles

Football programme would be a bit obscure - sorry

Great photo James. Easy

Do you not find that a German U Boat Commander writing to ask Arsenal for help finding his family in Hamburg, just after the war, is highly obscure! Sherlock

Fascinating story, Dave. I think there were some codes in those war-time Palace programmes I got from you. I'll have to work out what Crystal Palace 0 actually meant! Sherlock

The border encasing the advert on the back of some of the early 30s Aston Villa programmes was comprised of a series of little swastikas.

I did wonder whether that meant something (though, yes, I'm aware the symbol was once one of peace)
