Very sad to hear of Richie Benaud's passing. Another voice of childhood gone. Great commentator. Shows what high regard he was held in, as we considered him as 'one of our own'

A voice of my youth

the days when you could watch all five days of the test on BBC and not listen to incessant babble and stats but have a commentator who told you what you needed to hear.

Funny incisive and those flat vowels. "Bowled him"

Sad day.

Hear hear

Genuinely a little upset when I heard the news this morning - Grew up listening to his superb commentary and was lucky enough to meet him at the Oval a few years ago - Had his photo taken with my son and signed an autograph, lovely chap.

Depressing that all these sportsmen from my youth keep passing

RIP Richie

I'm another for whom Richie was the voice of cricket when I was growing up, watching the tests in the late 60s I sometimes wondered if his mic had packed up but I soon realised that Richie would never use 10 words if one sufficed. How I wish more sports commentators would follow his example.

A sad day for all cricket lovers.

RIP

From my youth Richie was synonymous with the summer game - along with John Arlott and Brian Johnston.

His was an instantly recognisable voice. He was never afraid to broach some of the more controversial topics and he was always worth listening to for an entertaining commentary and his detailed knowledge of the game.

R.I.P. Richie

I don't usually go in for all this RIP business, but his was the voice that stood out growing up watching England get beat (what seemed like every summer) during the mid to late 80s.

Held in high esteem by current players, former players and pundits alike - as Boycott used to say "morning Richie, morning everybody"

Sad

I had a tear in my eye when I heard this last night. I grew up listening to TMS and his voice, plus those of Messrs Arlott & Johnston, made cricket come alive. They were so good that you barely needed TV coverage at all.

I have 2 photos of Richie, one batting, one bowling - how appropriate.

Batting, at Worcester, May 1956, on his way to a ton.

Bowling, round the wicket (which bamboozled many a batsman), 1962

Abiding memory for me was his withering response to the Chappell brothers conspiring to bowl that under-arm delivery when New Zealand needed a 6 off the last ball for victory.

It may have meant that Australia won but, as far as he was concerned, cricket had lost - and that was far more important.
