A friend of mine was given this to raffle (amongst other things) for funds for her local hospice and asked me for advice on its worth. I've no idea really other than its probably worth more than your average signed shirt. So advice please?

Sorry to be pedantic, but the text under the shirt is slightly misleading. It states “Jersey worn by Henning Berg 1999 Champions League Final vs Bayern Munich signed by the Man Utd Squad.”

I don't believe Henning actually featured in the final. It's more likely a shirt worn by Henning Berg but definitely not from the final. The Certificate of Authenticity is a better description.

Also the shirt itself states Uefa Champions League Winners 1999 so it must have been produced after the final.

Whatever, it's still an excellent item I hope it raises good money for the charity

i believe Shakey is really poorly at the moment and he may not get back to you.

I am really no shirt expert but i can tell you the following
1 Wendy is indeed the charity administrator at Manchester United
2 The certificate almost certainly does not match the shirt
3 The certificates were not difficult to obtain and indeed photocopy or reproduce
Nowadays they put a hologram on the certificate which ties up with a hologram on the shirt or item
Even that is not foolproof however.A certain former Manchester United youth player nicked a roll of holograms and certiicates and put them on megastore shirts which he had named and numbered up without realising there are differences between a players shirt and a megastore shirt.

The main difference is the stitching and quality of the cloth.
A megastore shirt is a pile of shit from the Far East whereas a players shirt has extra stitching for things like a penalty area fight.
Imagine what would happen if everytime a player pulled somebody's shirt the sleeve came off.
The players shirts were made in your era by 4 machines at the factory.
Behind the blue label in the neck is a white label.
If that has the number 2 or 4 or 6 or 8 it has passed the first test.
Obviously yours is in a frame which is a classic way of hiding it.
The other way is to shred or cut out the white label and say "the player didn't like it" or "it got screwed in the laundry"

Alsi the scribbles aka as autographs are easy to copy.
There were a couple of lads at Old trafford in this era that were employed in merchandising.
They could do all of the signatures pretty well.
Also autopens came into their own in this era.
There was a memorabilia shop owner in Chester that did time for faking signed shirts.
I can't remember his name

Final piece of bad news is that were heavily reproduced in Hong Kong.
The odds are not good for you.

All the above said if it is a gift for a charity auction i would lose the certificate and take the plaque off the frame and auction or raffle it as what it appears to be.
"A Manchester United shirt from 1999/2000 signed by the playing squad"

Thanks for the advice. The description at the bottom of the frame and the embroidery is what made me think something wasn't right.

It's come from a reputable source by all accounts and of course was donated so no money has changed hands, and if it is nothing special it will go into the charity raffle along with the other items.

I also doubt if the matchworn shirts for the final had "winners" on them.

the shirt is from 1999/2000 season

They are always from reliable sources
Nobody has ever shown me one yet and said "i think this is a fake. What do you think"
i used to be the only one getting shirts but that was about 8 years ago.
Always had to fight the Hong kong brothel keepers who did a snazzy line in replica sorry genuine shirts.
In those cases the one question i always asked was how did a Beckham get all the way to Hong Kong.
The answer was always the same.
They came from a reliable source in the kit room or laundry.
i think the word i always used was bollocks

Well as this was given free for charity, and given the person who has owned it since 1999 is a friend of the person raising money for the charity I'd suspect it's a fairly reliable source, if questionable framing narrative.

Anyway, thanks to everyone for their help.

You leave Mark Clattenberg alone.

He was very upset last season.
He was only one appearance away for getting a Premier League winners medal
Very Happy Very Happy
