I had the tour brochure, which i supposed was the only one for the tour, but i`m pretty sure it was sharrow that told me, no, there were others produced at every venue. So far i`ve tracked down four of `em.... but not the one played at the Nelson venue, where i currently am hanging out keeping an eye on me Mum & Dad (thank God i missed the ending of this last season back home!!!... well apart from tv & internet coverage)
I doubt whether the programmes are worth owt much, again sharrow could probably put thee right there. Here`s some more details of the matches... The Blades won the trophy of course!!... and people say we win nowt, pah!!

Not sure why the obsession of playing each other but they managed to play each other 12 times in a little over a month after playing each other in the league that season as well !!
They do come up for sale reasonable often as there are so many games and I believe that there are seperate programmes for each but I dont own them all, you wont be able to retire on them as they tend to go for between £10 and £30 each normally.

hi lads thanks for you help
after looking at the programme again i think this is just the programme for the whole tournament as it says on the first page sheffield united and blackpool will play each other 11 times on this tour.but there is a single page insert inside with both teams on but no date.the insert has the following on
curtain raiser 12.45 kick off otago boys school v invitation xi
boac round robin tournament 2.30 kick off blackpool v sheff utd
so i don't know which match out of the 11 this is from but maybe one of you two will know
there are also 3 authographs in the sheff utd section of the programme
thanks again for your help cheers dave |

There was a brochure issued covering the whole tournament.
I have or am aware of full programmes for the match in Canada and ones in NZ dated 15/5, 22/5 and 13/6.
I have a single sheet for the match dated 5/6 but don't know whether this was issued with a full programme, the tournament brochure or on its own.
I understand that full programmes were not issued for every match but if they weren't, single sheets were issued.
I have been trying to track down these programmes for many years with limited success.
If anyone can confirm the existence of programmes from the other matches (gkb and robbo - which ones do you have?) or if anyone has any to sell please drop me a PM. |

In an attempt to promote its trans-continental flights BOAC organized this 11 match tour of the antipodes. The airline paid, for travel and accomodation. United Players were not payed any extra but they were allowed £5 daily expenses. £1000 to the winners.
Eleven games in four weeks was going to be tiring coming especially as it did after a long season. The players from both clubs decided to come to an arrangement, so each club won the same amount of games, the prize money shared, and everyone would come home happy. The scores were worked out in advance.
Unfortunately, for whatever reason, or perhaps a stroke of misfortune, Ray Charnley of Blackpool scored in the final minute of the first game in New Zealand and therefore ruined the agreement. All bets were now off and the tour turned into a 'Kickathon' with both sides kicking lumps out of one another.
Relations were further soured when a fight broke out between members of both teams at a post match party. It is alledged that the fracas came about as the players competed for the attention of some local nurses.
Regarding the programmes, the most common one is the tour brochure.

Some games appear to have their own issue, for example
www.flickr.com/photos/sharrowblade/6183933863
but it is believed that the tour brochure was available at each venue, and that they had a single sheet insert.
If anyone has any of the individual inserts or programmes I would really appreciate a scan if possible.
As a further footnote United went onto to tour South America and Central America in the following years. Although there appears to be no logic behind these tours, there are no official records or finances to be found regarding these tours, it has been suggested that the FA financed these, using United as guinea pigs, as a trial for the run up to the 1970 World Cup. A point proven that after one game in Mexico City, Mick Jones had to spend days in hospital with the aid of an oxygen mask.
In 1968, the local police drew their revolvers on the team whilst they were in an Acapulco nightclub, Len Badger and Bernard Shaw had replaced the dancing girls in the cages, and were gyrating their own moves to the displeasure of the locals.
Any sane team would have probably baulked at the travelling, the humidity and the altitude.
But, then United have never been sane.

I don't know what this is worth but £10-£20 seems very cheap to me for a single sheet issue along with a brochure for a game played in New Zealand in 1965.
If you are looking to sell it I'd recommend giving it to Chris Williams in Sporting Gold or sticking it on ebay. |

Away from house at moment... will look up the individual ones i have tomorrow & let you know sharrow.
Yes i remember Alan Birchenall in his book (bring back the birch or summat???) saying that it was meant to be a nice friendly tournament but blackpool came out all guns blazing.... cue for the rest of the tour: lumps of shins, knees, chins & all major limbs thrown about the NZ greenery. |

Tend to agree with you there Gary.
I have always paid more than this or missed out because I didn't bid high enough. At one time there were a number of Blackpool collectors I knew all going for these programmes and this of course bumped the price up.
But now that most of us have got the common issues they probably will sell for around the £20 mark, but that's the brochures on their own, the single sheets are worth a lot more as I doubt as many of these survived.
If a brochure or sheet ever comes up from one of the other games this will go for 'silly' money and I'm only thinking about the Blackpool collectors I know.
gkb and robbo please let me know which brochures and single sheets you have. |

Found out my programme filing system is shite... i can`t find one of the single sheet efforts, probably inside some other programme somewhere, i`ll keep trying.
I did find easily the tour brochure, and two programmes for 2 games in auckland, one 18 pages, one 22 pages.... 15th may & june 13.
I had 2 other programmes for The Blades in NZ but they are both the 1975 tour. |
