Just watched the auction. One owner collection sold for around £165k.

Nice retirement fund!

I picked up one lot but saw the other two I was hoping for go a lot higher - there were too many programmes combined in some individual lots in my opinion but I think we've had that debate before

As you say though there were some substantial bids going in and a lovely and very random collection (Bryan Horsnell I think?)

Got one lot but paid more than I wanted to. Just the one programme required out of the lot so will be moving the rest on.

Was Bryan Horsnell's collection not sold before? I could be wrong but that is my recollection.

It seemed to me that everything must go as small minimum bids were accepted.

I thought the Irish Free State League v Welsh League 1932 was incredibly cheap at £65 + fees. I already have it but consider it very scarce. I need 27,28,31 & 35 in Dublin and wouldn't let them go for anything near as cheap. I've none of the games in Wales from that time.

Some of the real quality items fetched really nice prices such as the Bradford City pre WW1 bound volume and New Brighton v Man Utd 1939/40. I didn't note the exact selling prices.

This was the second part of his collection - mostly programmes. The first half fetched £400k (BBC reported at the time)

Yes, quite a few lots were virtually given away but

- 1911/12 Bradford bound volume went for £18,000

- New Brighton v Man United 1939/40 went for £4,400

- The Man Utd v Benfica 1968 "replay at Highbury" fetched £7,500

Thanks I stand corrected. One of the few really great eclectic collections left. Back in the early 80's (and before) this was common but most specialize on their own club or certain big match.

Graham Budd is right in many respects. The Bryan Horsnell collection was due to the death of the owner. There are also several contributing factors. One a lot of clubs have decided they won't bother providing matchday programmes and prefer on-line. Is this because they just cannot find someone to pick them up from the printers! I no longer go to games where a club does not sell programmes. I know I am getting older and its a way of not over doing it.

For a new collector, if their club does not do programmes then I cannot see that person becoming an obsessive.

Fewer clubs now have a shop in the ground. I used to get the Sporting Gold catalogue come through the door and go through it straight away. Now I more often than not I forget to look on-line.

There will always be a marketplace for the likes of Graham Budd but I am not convinced they only deal with collectors.

I didn't think Bryan Horsnell had passed away?

I would say that Graham Budd probably caters for high end or wealthier at least collectors and dealers as opposed to say 1888 or Sportingold. As an example the GB items included a wonderful collection of cup finals all in one lot, which are like £800 each by the time you pay commission, which is out of my range for one off purchases. I chip away and get one or two here and there, but imagine that is right up the street of a dealer who can break it apart for money.

None of that is a problem of course they can do whatever they like and everyone can be catered for.

Graham budd for me has always been successful. Yes the prices can be high sometimes but you get he quality and anything that I don't require I tend to find I can easily move on.
