Now this is a proper long shot, but you never know...
I have a pal who lost his Dad a few years ago. His dad was a ref/lino but my mate hasn't really got anything from his football career to remember him by (lots of other stuff, but football was a big part of his life).
If I could find a programme featuring his old chap in the middle or on the line I reckon it'd mean the world to him.
The details I have are sketchy - like I say, a long shot - but this is what I have:
Name: Lewis George Barding (but don't know if he went by Lewis, Lew, George...)
From: Exeter or thereabouts
Level: Definitely football league as a lino, possibly as ref also. Did lots of non-league in the South-West also.
Era: Early-60's to Early-80's. Football League most likely the latter part of that time, but nothing definite.
So yeah, it's unlikely that even amongst the dedicated stat-keepers here his name would crop up in your records (I've found nothing online), but if you ever do happen to come across a programme (any programme) with his name in, drop me a line would you?
Cheers,
Toby. _________________ Always looking for pre-1980 Cowes homes, pre-1987 Cowes aways, and any other bits and bobs relating to Cowes F.C. and I.W. football in general. Someone has to.

I'll have a look...was I the only person who read Barding as a verb until I read the message and thought it was going to be about articles waxing lyrical re refs ?? _________________ Currently disposing of my collection so please email any wants lists to [email protected].
Most Plymouth post 1959 but plenty of others including reserves, friendlies, Cup Finals Internationals and Club issues, handbooks and other sports. |

That would be brilliant - many thanks for that.
You're probably right about the misleading thread title. I might see if I can edit it to put a comma in _________________ Always looking for pre-1980 Cowes homes, pre-1987 Cowes aways, and any other bits and bobs relating to Cowes F.C. and I.W. football in general. Someone has to. |

No, I assumed it was a West Country or Wightian word (is that a word?) for a form of abuse. |

Wightian's not a word, no - not sure there is one to express that kind of local origin. Wightish? Never heard it.
I find the notion of using "Barding" to define a form of abuse as quite appealing. However, we have no need for such a word over here as we are unfailingly respectful of the officials on all occasions.
(Sort of) interestingly, there is a linguistic link between the I.W. and the West Country when it comes to football - these are the only two places I've ever heard "windy" in common usage to describe a dodgy keeper. _________________ Always looking for pre-1980 Cowes homes, pre-1987 Cowes aways, and any other bits and bobs relating to Cowes F.C. and I.W. football in general. I remember shouting "Windy" at some visiting keepers at Selhurst Park back in the day, like just after they'd dropped a cross or were taking a goal kick. So maybe not just IOW & Western. |

Really? interesting - maybe the primary factor in common usage is temporal - rather than geographical - then. People often suggest the IW is stuck in the past, or lagging behind the mainland at least. In some ways that's definitely true...
I rather like it as a term, I must say. But then I'm nothing if not parochial. _________________ Always looking for pre-1980 Cowes homes, pre-1987 Cowes aways, and any other bits and bobs relating to Cowes F.C. and I.W. football in general. Someone has to. |

This thread has gone from etymological to temporal....which is pretty good for a programme about forums ( fora?? Forii?)
I think Windy was replaced by the ubiquitous "Dodgy keeper"....reckon it died out in the eighties
But I do recall it as a useful adjective sadly applicable to a number of Argyle keepers but most notably Neil Ramsbottom, subject of a controversial player of the year win when a local newsagent and personal friend conducted a vote gathering effort in his High Street shops to make sure he won....

I was pretty regular on the Devvy End from 91-94 and definitely heard it a good few times there - might just have been the Cornish fans who smoked pot all through the game and wore seventies silk scarves religiously (there's that temporal thing again...) _________________ Always looking for pre-1980 Cowes homes, pre-1987 Cowes aways, and any other bits and bobs relating to Cowes F.C. and I.W. football in general. I'd evacuated the area by then so had to make do with away matches...
I had a silk scarf though
