Not having a pop at the new member who has some pre war programmes for sale, far from it, but well remember a similar advert two years back also offering some nice stuff from the same period. I lost £400 and others who contacted me lost probably about the same amount between them, so think caution should be used with any such transaction from a new member with no history of any such transactions in the past on here.

Genuinely hope the new member does become a long standing and well respected member of this Forum. The fact that the posting hasn't had any of the scans asked for yet did set me thinking though, although again this could be because the guy hasn't had the time to do so yet?

A lot of folk are ruing ever having crossed paths with Andy Lane now, so maybe we should consider having some kind of probationary period for new posters that safeguards not only our interests but also theirs, as no doubt the ability to rip someone off does pop up occasionally?

As I am that new member, l feel obliged to respond accordingly.
I do own a number of pre war football programmes that have sat dormant for a number of years until I recently decided to move house.
I do feel quite aggrieved that has a new member you should doubt my integrity without first contacting me direct.
I know very little about football programmes and their values and have sought advice on this forum of which I have received some very positive responses that I am trying to keep up to speed with.
I will consider all aspects of selling programmes, take proper advice and then sell to the right person for the right amount.

I don't understand how you are aggrieved at all , if you think of it logically . John is just pointing out there are crooks out there that will try and steal money from collectors . There are too many of us who have lost vast amounts of money to con men to be worried about your feelings.
I don't think it is nasty at all to warn people to be careful. I'm sure you're genuine and are pleased with the help of members but John's message is fine under the circumstances .

I am completely in agreement with MrBthechef. Being also a 'new member' I would certainly not take kindly to such unwarranted & quite frankly unnecessary fear mongering. I would take my wares elsewhere. Try Sports Programmes at Gamlingay. I've been putting items through them for many years with high returns. And they will trust you.

As for the Andy Lane factor please let us not let him sully the reputation of the many who use this site for positive end results.

I think if you look at my original posting you'll see that I was advising the old adage of "caveat emptor" or buyer beware. I also advised that I would genuinely like to see you become a longstanding and respected member of this site. If you've taken umbrage at that I don't understand it.

What you do have to remember is that there have been many people who've had their fingers burnt recently, so advising folk to use caution when dealing with new posters is eminently sensible in my opinion, especially as I've been one of them.

There are some simple precautions anybody should take when buying items on here, or for that matter anywhere, and that is not to pay via bank transfer - there's absolutely no comeback there. Scans are good, but can actually be taken form anywhere as I found out to my cost two years back.

I have had some wonderful deals on here over the years, including a wonderful Blackpool FC collection from pre WW2 through the war years, and then hundreds of 40's and 50's, and numerous 1960's rarities. I drove down to meet the guy though at a service station 140 miles away rather than send £2k through either the post or bank transfer. Simple stuff really, and if he didn't show up I'd have effed and blinded a bit ( probably a lot actually) and lost about £20 on petrol.

So, MrBthechef, I really do hope you take the advice I gave other folk - not yourself - in the manner it was given. There was no attempt to sully your reputation at all, but advising folk to err on the side of caution. Don't tell me you wouldn't do similar yourself if faced with making some fairly expensive purchases off somebody you've never seen or heard of before?

How can you sully the reputation of an unknown person with three posts ?
He could be genuine. He could be an scamster ? What is possibly wrong in saying be careful ?

I would say a aggressive response raises concerns. I would say a thoughtful and polite response would come from someone genuine but understanding the obvious situation.

The original post was "" I do have a number of pre war programmes that I may be interested in selling and would like to know how to go about it within the forum. ""

This leads me to think MrBthechef could be asking two questions. It's a bit ambiguous . I would be interested in selling . And would like advise from the forum. Fair enough , no problem , welcome to the forum. Or I would be interested in selling to people in the forum. Which John's reply was be careful . Again fair enough.

The new forum member has very Kindly answered my request for a PM if he had any of my wants........unfortunately he didn,t have them but he did provide a list of nine Pompey programmes covering the 30's,40's and 50's. (No prices stated and no requests for valuations). I have provided some advice including mentioning that some new posters turn up request valuations and then disappear (from memory some posters are fed up with this but I see it as a plus for the forum because of the wealth of knowledge on here!) also that several members have had their fingers burnt in the past with various scams......hence the caution shown.

Ps. The only negative......he didn,t leave a name? Genuine mistake?

I know one or two ex members didn't like to give "free" valuations as it were, and i can understand new members getting upset by this if they have genuine queries and help was asked for.

A new member comes on and says, I have a few pre 50 Rangers homes for sale. How do I deal with this?

I suppose exactly the same as any other kind of financial transaction Eck. Have you ever invested in any Nigerian email pleas for money? No (I assume anyway?) Have you ever bought blind off mother collectors? Of course you have, we all have, it's the way business was done for donkey's yeras prior to ebay.

With ebay you have some protection, you don't with blind sales. I've taken punts on this site before but you tend to get a feel for folk from other dealings, and their posts etc.

What I would say is this, take every precaution you possibly can, and never, ever, pay by bank transfer as you have no rights whatsoever once you've transferred it, even if you've become subject to a scam as you've given the money voluntarily.

I don’t see any issue whatsoever in raising the issue that a new member, offering rare programmes, should be treated with a certain amount of caution until it is established that they are genuine. We’re talking about high value items here and as others have pointed out, fingers have been severely burned in the past.

A new member doesn’t know that of course, but I can’t see anything in Auchinleckian’s posts that would cause offence to them.

Maybe if the new member listed exactly what he has, and also provide a couple of photos of the items with proof that he has them eg. sitting on top of a copy of one of todays newspapers, or with his username written on a piece of paper in the photo, that would help establish that he is genuine.

Nobody is saying this guy is a scamster, far from it, just that people should tread carefully until they’re confident who they are dealing with.
