Just heard this sad news.

His EFC side from '84 to '87 was one of the best teams I've seen.

RIP Howard.

Big shame to hear this breaking on Radio 5 during the last hour or so.

Many comparisons being made with the Forest team of the late '70's, in as much as the Everton team of the mid '80's don't seem to get the recognition they deserve for their achievements either. One of the most under-rated teams in the recent history of British football.

Have always felt they would have gone on to win the European Cup in 1986 - best European Champions England never had.

Very sad news.

Probably the finest manager in Everton's history.

Very sorry to hear this news.

I spent a couple of hours with him in a Christchurch bar in 1987 [Everton were touring New Zealand].
A really nice man.

Sad to hear of HK,s passing, RIP, as mentioned before he put together a great Everton team in the 80,s which sadly missed out on testing itself against europes greatest teams.

Very shocked to hear the news, I had the utmost respect for Howard as a player and a manager.

My pictorial tribute follows.

I know you all know this, but it's not mentioned above, he was also the youngest ever player in an FA Cup Final when appearing for Preston in 1964.

RIP Howard Kendall.

Great pictures.
In the first picture the PP underneath the Preston badge got me curious so I did a little digging. It stands for Prince of Peace (once translated from Latin) which seems very appropriate given the sad news.

Interesting - I'd always lazily assumed it meant Proud Preston.

I thought that's what it meant too...

and yes RIP to Howard Kendall - met him a few times when I was younger and seemed like a nice guy.

I can tell You Fella's he was a wonderfull kind warm clever man who would talk football for hours with you if you was a Blue he embrace you like a young son and speak to you almost in reverencial fatherly terms and you'd stand and listen in silence to him till he prompted you to reply back to him. He was fantastic manager he was no saint though and his record with players over the years is testament to that. Some he let go early and for wrong reasons who went on and had good careers after they left Goodison. Andy Gray Gary Lineker all spring to mind on that one. He created and moulded one of the best sides I had the privilege and pleasure of seeing play and at that time you just didn't appreciate it all and take it all in as youngsters you think it will just go on and on and on but it never. I can vouch for a fact Everton would have won 2 European Cups with ease in 85/86 and 86/87 if they were allowed into them. He left heartbroken as most of his players did cause they couldn't play in that tournament. He came back to us twice and led us away from relegation and managed poor everton sides then. Dare I consider though there was everton fans who put together a leaflet before the Coventry Milk Cup game calling for his head outside the ground and there was just over 4,000 at that match. Had Graeme Sharp not got that late winner or Kevin Brock not done his back pass we'll never know but fate made sure they both did and the rest is history. As a player he was lucky enough to play for Everton in the 60s when they were always challenging for the League and with Alan Ball and Colin Harvey. Our Blue Holy Trinity now sadly down to 1 left of that Trinity. He like his drink but he was popular down to earth and loved speaking talking and meeting fans and as a result he did more than most of the drinking side and people who know the real truth about Howard will admit that. I STILL LOVE HIM AND ALWAYS WILL DO AND THANK YOU. THANK YOU SIR.
with love from a heart broken Blue.
