Bring it on! |
There was a day I'd have agreed with you, Pete, but their inability to pace their innings is as much down to the pernicious effects of all this limited over cricket as it is about the home team's bowling.
Put simply, why do batsmen feel the need to welly the ball out of the ground with monotonous regularity?
Does a batsman no harm to go a dozen overs without scoring a run.
Another Ashes match over within 4 days. Damn the one-day game. |
Steve, there's no way the Aussies would have blocked their way to 412, on that pitch against our bowlers. The limpet Bill Lawry at his very best back in the 60's might have lasted a session or two but he'd have got about 30 in that time which would have had no impact on that total.
So we beat them in 4 days, what's the problem with that? All ticket holders (if there were any for Day 5) get their money back on an unused ticket with no play. Loss of income for Glamorgan? Maybe, but they'd have sold record amounts of beer. But that has to offset against the interest generated by winning against Australia playing thrilling cricket.
Steve, I'm no fan of T20 either (I was a slow bowler who'd have gone for 12-an-over!), but if you don't find 1300 runs scored in 4 days at 4 per over, and 20 wickets gone, exciting, then you must have an interesting life in Aberdeen. |

Hi Sellsell 39, the ticket cost me £85, it was for in the Cathedral Road end, the ticket was probably one of the highest price tickets, as it was from a batch of tickets that was returned for resale from a corporate sponsor |

I,m a lover of test cricket.......have watched the test in australia & new zealand.
A great result, that should shut the convicts up for a little while !!!!!
Just a shame that cricket has sold its sole to SKY..... _________________ RESPECT..................

It will shut them up for a while Pete, thats why I have to take full advantage of it when I get to work tomorrow morning wearing my England shirt. Just to let you know, Aussies are of course a sporting nation...but not a nation of sports, they take defeat very badly and blame everything from the weather, umpires, state of the pitch etc etc, but few will admit they have been beaten by a better team...but I will remind them they have been |

You are wrong. Sky has done a fantastic job for cricket and has brought some much needed money into the game. The production and knowledge is superb and is far better than anything that the BBC or Channel 4 ever produced in the past. |

Agreed. I don't have sky and don't wish to pay for sports that should be free to view.
I just watch online. _________________ Not Forgotten; Allwright, Greechan, Hagan, Kennedy, Littler, Purver, Robotham, Saunders, Shields |

I've always felt a bit "unusual" being Scottish and liking cricket, Pete!
Long time back, I remember watching England v somebody on the telly and what seemed like hours of Derek Underwood and possibly Ray Illingworth bowl over after over against two batsmen who were intent on preserving their time at the crease at al costs.
Run scoring wasn't part of that agenda.
I just found it a fascinating few hours "entertainment" and I think my judgement has been a bit clouded by watching that session of cricket (maybe that's why I liked Geoff Boycott's approach!)
Test cricket should be a real test of skill, tactics, timing and approach and I've never liked to see players throw their wicket away by playing like they're in one of these awful 20 over affairs.
But I guess, for a lot of players, when they're subjected to so much limited over cricket, the urge to hammer the ball rather than just leave it must become part of their DNA.
This Joe Root, though, he's got a great future ahead of him. _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/derby1884/sets/ |

Totally agree with the above. When England were 200 odd for 4 in the second innings they should have battened down the hatches and ensured they scored heavily. When the Aussies were 97 for 1 don't tell me a few of you were maybe thinking the same?
Anybody else notice anything interesting in the game, statistically speaking, that I'm fairly sure will not have happened in test match cricket before, and I've not heard any of the commentators or pundits coment on it either? If you look hard enough it sticks out like a sore thumb. |

I love my stats Auckinleckian but I can't see anything really unusual. 2 England batsmen with 4-lettered surnames both scored 60 from 89 balls? Both left-handed No 8's scored 77? Please enlighten me.
When Australia were 97-1 it was possible they would get an unlikely win. I say "unlikely" but it would have broken Australia's record (404-3 in 1948) and the record in England. Both batsmen in the morning had lived a charmed life and on that pitch with our bowlers I wasn't sweating - but I gave a huge cheer when Warner was out just before lunch!
While I too don't like seeing good batsmen fritter their wickets away, you surely can't argue that these 4 days were better entertainment than one of those turgid 5-day draws with Boycott 186* compiled over 2 and a bit days, bowlers with more maidens bowled than runs conceded, and fielders with pristine whites at the end of a day's play?
Derek Underwood was mentioned earlier and he was a great bowler, particularly in English conditions. But I remember one IVA Richards treating him like a net bowler, stepping back and bashing him over extra cover, and to the next identical ball, stepping across and whipping him through mid-wicket. Outrageous!!!
That was in 1975 or 76 and 40 years later we see someone like Mark Wood doing something similar to 88mph Aussie bowlers. In fact, everyone does it - or tries to do it.
I love it. Roll on the Second Test. |

England took all twenty wickets without once clean bowling any batsman. Have followed test crciket for 50 odd years now and can't ever remember that happening before.
I agree the game was exciting, but I'm old school in as much as test cricket should always be a compelling drama with twists and turns, and that a draw over 5 days could be every bit as exciting as the game just gone - take the last England vs Australia test at Cardiff when Anderson and Panesaar held out for an hour on the last day to secure a wonderful draw. |

I wouldn't argue with that at all John. Just the same as a goalless draw can be just as exciting as a 3-3.
If I had time I would watch all of a 4-day County game, from 1st ball to last, just as readily as I would a football match.
Not spotted that stat, very good. We need Bill Frindall to do some digging. Indeed, we need to dig for poor old Bill now. |

Like many other folk who are fascinated by statistics I do display a somewhat OCD approach to mental arithmetic.
I came across another statistic on the first day of the test that really appealed to my OCD mathematical nature. England finished the first day on 343 for 7, and straight away I saw the uniqueness of the set of numbers - basically because I'm a nerd. 343 is 7 cubed, so the score was actually 7x7x7 for 7. All the sevens. Thank god the game didn't start a day earlier, on July 7th otherwise it would have been 7x7x7 for 7 on 7/7. I simply wouldn't have been able to contain myself!
Is anyone else more than slightly unhinged like this? |

Haven't even seen the highlights of the first day today but with only one wicket falling I'm thinking to myself that the art of preserving one's wicket at all costs isn't totally lost.

Stokes's dismissal summed up today for me.
There was a collective bout of amnesia as regards the basics of the game. _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/derby1884/sets/ |
