Just as a off-shoot to the sad death of Billy Sharps son were do you stand on the tribute issue should it be applause or silence.
Personally I hate the applause with a passion and think it should be silence everytime, maybe times have moved on and this is something that will now never change. |

Definitely the 'sound' of silence, it shows respect. There's always plenty of noise. |

you are really asking a question about tradition v common sense.
On a personal note i prefer the silence.
You always have the silence option when it is a gathering of people who have made a journey of their own free will to pay tribute to somebody.
When you go to a football match,as an example, and attempt to honour somebody or something that everybody might not wish to show respect for, you are in effect giving, every dick head and every drunk the opportunity to have his moment of fame.
Also you will often get noises from the concourses from people who don't realise there is a minutes silence going on.
That gets the inevitable piss pots screaming abuse which tends to pick up a head of steam.
A minutes applause is i believe better placed at such times and let's be honest and say it's not offensive.it is just not traditional.
So what, i would rather have a minutes applause than the moment being totally ruined |

Both 60 secs each silence then loud applause, thats more or less how it's been done for years anyway. |
