I concentrated on Home programmes first and foremost. It was only when I had most of them did I start concentrating on aways.

Most aways only have a small piece about your own team anyway

Thats my view for what its worth anyway.

Personaly i am not a great lover of the modern day prog, can take them or leave them and only purchase at the few games i go to a season now out of habit, if i was you Framp i would go has far back as say 1950 (for starters) to collect progs that can give you a feel for the history of your club. The 50s a golden age for the football programme.

My advice would be to start adding away games other than league matches, for example collect FA Cup and/or Carling Cup ect.

At least you will be adding some variation to your collection at minimal expense.

hello mate, the big question which you need to answer is what kind of collection would make you feel good ? is it matches since you were born, all homes since war etc. The most common is people collecting homes initially as an extension of them going to games (mainly homes) but expand to other categories as their collection builds and missing items get harder to find and more expensive. My personal preference is first team homes as far back as possible and also all aways from championship winning seasons.

If finances allow try to collect the older programmes (40's - 50's). There are some real bargains around from that era - prices on eBay for example are testament to that - in comparison to what such era programmes were selling for a few years ago. In the long term you'll be saving a good few quid by buying programmes from the 40's/50's now, once (fingers crossed) prices start rising again you'll see for yourself (fingers crossed again).

Just my opinion. Judge

Tricky one. I get more joy out of old programmes than modern programmes. So for the complete cost of buying an whole season 1990s , ( what would that cost in postage) , i would buy one or two older items. In your situation i would probably try and buy ONE programme for each season from the 1946/47 to 1999/00 . That way you build up a nice collection , illustrating the changes over the years.

Good point ....but what nobody has mentioned is the space reqired ....especially yo store these modern day programmes , epics .... a full seasons would take up the room that several seasons of the 50;s and 60's and even 70;s would take up ..... and although there are adverts in the older programmes they are all smaller ( as are the programmes ogf course) .......SPACE is a bifg factor ....... I stopped buying the modern programmes in 1993 , both because of the cost factor and size factor ... too much space needed ....... Nod

My own suggestion is to take a two pronged approach to it.

1) Try and collect all your club’s big match programmes. Cup finals and semis (regardless of comp), league winning or promotion clinching games, opening games at stadiums etc etc
2) See what you can pick up cheaply. Go to fairs and you might pick up 10 mid 80s for £10 or similar.

Myself I look for very game, home and away. Don’t worry too much about storage. I’ve 1000 programmes and they fit on a couple of shelves (in ring binders)

I buy the modern era programmes but I very rarely even open them.

All my programmes are in ring binders turned on their edge so the programmes hang straight on a specially built bookshelf. That is up until 97/98 when it took 4 binders just for that season.

Since then I store them in boxes.
