When was the Manchester United vs Dukla Prague EC Nov. 1957 European Cup actually played ?
The records seem to indicate Nov. 20th., but the programme that I obtained for the game from the club is dated Nov. 13th. 1957.
So why would the programme have a different date from when the game was actually played ?
It's now 52 years ago and I don't remember the situation.
Can anyone clear this mystery up ? |

Andrew Endlar's excellent Complete Record book on United - not the Breedon book - gives the date as November 20th, sandwiched in between the home game vs Wednesday on 16/11/57 and away at Newcastle on 23/11/57. There was no game on 13/11.57 at all.
The Dukla game was United's 2322nd competitive first team game! That's how comprehensive the book is. |

Keith Appleby's Man Utd programme catalogue has the programme dated 13th November issue no 11.The Sheff Wed home game on 16th Nov issue 12,Tottenham on Nov 30 issue 13.
No explanation of the wrong date on the Dukla Prague programme |

In case anyone was still wondering about the above programme / match the game was due to have been played on 13 Nov 1957 but was cancelled in the morning following the news of the death of the Czech president, Antonín Zápotocký.

The game was played the following week on 20 Nov 1957. The programme of the 13 Nov 1957 was issued, hence the discrepancy.
P.S. Does this qualify as the oldest thread revival - 11 years ?! |

Yes the programmes and any tickets issued all dated the 13th November were used the week after, but there was something else produced that DID have the correct date on despite me not spotting it 11 years ago when i uploaded it to Flickr! _________________ To see 20,00++ original items relating to Newton Heath & Manchester Utd 1878-2023 then visit www.flickr.com/photos/manchesterunitedman1/sets to see entire uploads.

I came across the date discrepancy whilst doing some research recently. It was something that I wasn't previously aware of. A quick search of this forum showed up a post, albeit from 11 years ago. As it didn't give a specific reason for the postponement I thought it would update the thread.
