Thought I'd pen a few articles about prices raised at the December auction, and look at whether or not the buyer has a good deal or not. All lots can be checked on the sportingold website. My own guesstimates, where appropriate, are in brackets.
139. 13 Assorted non league - guide price £110-120.
I had a bid in for this but nowhere near the final sale price of £230, or an average of just under £18 apiece. A few of those highlighted in their catalogue looked really nice, including Alnwick vs Newcastle "A" early 1950's (£25), Eynesbury vs Arsenal "A" 54-5 £20), and Bishop Auckland vs Scunthorpe 55-6 FACup (£30)
176. Home Farm vs Aberdeen 54-55- guide price £50-55.
Has been on "buy it now" on ebay for £25 for long enough. Unsold.
203. England memorabilia - former property of Sunday Times journo. 44 x post 1980 England aways, including over 60 genuine team sheets. Guiede price £75-90. Sale price £90. That works ouyt at just over £2 per programme - excellent value, plus 60 teams sheets basically buck shee. I think this was one of the real bargains for people buying to sell on.
220. Arsenal 47-8 homes, 22 in total. All bar two have punched holes. Guide price £180-220. Sale price £180, or just over £8 each. Don't buy punch holed programmes, and think the vendor got a good deal here.
1966 WORLD CUP FINALS lot numbers 299. Guide price £110-120. Sale price £90, and 330, guide price £70-75 match details written in, unsold. Lot number 383, guide price £120-130 Just goes to show much the stock of this iconic programme has fallen in the last couple of years.
338. 1960 European Cup Final, Real Madrid 7- E.Frankfurt 3. Guide price £35-40. Sale price £26. Another one to hit the buffers pricewise in the last few years. One of 6 for sale in the sale probably explains it.
406. 106 x Leyton Orient homes 1950's, including 14 x 1951-2 season. From a collection that's been sold over a few months(?) they all have match details written on the cover. Guide price £80-100. Sale price £130, or £1.25 each, a veritable bargain!
436. 100 x Scottish 1950's buck the trend again. 100 of them, guide price £80-100, sale price £380. It's always the same for such items.
453, 457, and 461. Grimsby pre war issues. As I've highlighted on ehre beofre, Grimsby programmes from this era always command premium prices due to the fantastic club shop nurturing loads of collectors in the late 80's and early 90's.
Grimsby vs N.Brighton guide price £280-300, sale price £580
Man. Utd vs Grimsby 39-40 truncated season guide price £380-400, also sold for £580
Grimsby vs Wolves and Doncaster reserves 39-40 truncated season
guide price £280-300, sale price £400.
The other 10 truncated 39-40 season attracted an average of £225 each.
More analysis to follow tomorrow... |

I think the Cod v New Brighton was the jewel in the crown of that lot John, as you rightly say Mariners pre war stuff is much sought after, the addition of New Brighton as opposition just made it more desirable. Good prices realized for the other Mariners items, makes the £300 odd for the mid 30's home v Man City on FeeBay look a bit feeble and possibly shows thats not the preferred medium for the really serious collectors.
Did you buy much? |

Had my eye on a few items:
64: St louis allstars v man utd est:260-280 didnt sell, no shit, I value this at £120 tops.
413: 14 signed george best pics est: 180-200 , sold for £620. nice.
635: historic issue matchcard 6page programme nottingham derby in essence ( notts club v notts olympic) 1884 est: 3500-4000 didnt sell. surprised personally.
671: tony colemans man city div 1 winrs medal 67/68 est: 3-3500 sold for £8,800!!
1069: man utv v norwich postponed 2 dec 78, est:110-120, laughable really, never seen this go cheap, sold for £400
1343: part of a programme arsenal v 2nd battallion scots guards 1890 est:500-600 sold for £2100
Some really strange final bids when you look at the estimates, and some really well priced man utd items especially that didnt sell
Wrong time of year maybe, people still feeling the pinch and xmas doesnt help. |

I noticed a lot of Man Utd stuff in this months auction, seemed a strange time of year for such an auction but then again if you pay the sort of wedge some pay for programmes the time of year is irrelevant.
Surprised at the George Best lot, I saw that and thought it was priced about right, maybe £250 tops. |

Been to a fair few auctions and being able to bid live via the net with this auction is a godsend. However i would give a medal to anyone who was there from the start at about 11.15 to about 9.30pm - Forget the time of year i think the length of the auction was far too long, you would need a sleeping bag |

Physically went once, and left at 7pm with about 250 lots to go. Have contented myself with on line buying, but for this one I was coming off night shift and so sent email bids in. |

Perhaps Chris might look at the length of the auction in future and split it somehow into a 2 day event, perhaps day 1 for ephemera and collectables and day 2 purely for programmes.
I would love to be able to go and have a look but the timescale puts me off, Its a good hour and half from Boston to Northampton, an hour browsing and then the auction, not to mention a drive home. |

I imagine the cost of hiring the suite at Northampton RFC is fairly prohibitive. Ditto, all the professional on costs. I also imagine that some folk might take an odd day's holiday to attend, but would draw the line at two. It's a diffuclt one to call.
With the internet now given most folk an opportunity to bid online should they want to, I'd like to see one of the auctions in Scotland? Christies started their football auctions at their Bath Street offices - the first of the footballing auctions as such. |
