Buyer opened a case because of item not received. I refunded without question and as a goodwill gesture sent a similar item free of charge.(both 1950's England btw) His original item turned up but he had to pay a one pound charge due to insufficient postage which was the fault of the post office because I posted 4 items and I paid what they asked. The buyer basically got 2 good items for free from me except for a one pound fee to the post office and he sent me a message calling me cheap and accusing me of being dishonest. I must say i've had enough of ebay. I won't sell anymore and use sparingly for buying.

tosser in question.

That's why I stopped years ago. I think you need pretty thick skin to sell on ebay. Vast majority of buyers are great but it only takes on like this to turn my stomach.

I still look and buy the odd item but perhaps only sell the odd thing and it's not football stuff so don't have that problem for some reason.

In fact I know the reason. Years ago when the internet was young a fair number of people setup website to sell football programmes. And a fair number didn't have clue, ripped people off all ways. So ebay feedback system was a dream come true for all those who had suffered like that. So as those sellers went on ebay the buyers picked them off for target practice and just got used to being GITS ! Smile

I think perhaps you deserve each and perhaps you could learn from this example. If you don't mind me saying.

When in an argument your aim should be to win the argument or settle the dispute in a positive way not some sideline event like who can think up the best insult. Remain civil at all times, carm and collected is the way to go with these people.

And if a person makes insults or threats just refuse to talk to them via email or otherwise. Then on places like ebay or indeed in court you will always be the winner because they accept you are protecting yourself.

Of course you are right. I acted impulsively,I saw red because I went the extra mile and the guy just laid into me because he had somehow worked out in his head that I caused him a lot of bother through trying to save 10p on postage, realised what I did and deviously sent extras to stop bad feedback.
I let him off the hook by using an insult,I would have been a lot happier if I had left the shame totally with him.

I suspect he buys a lot off ebay and just didn't realise what you had done. I don't sell on ebay now but when I did I got used to replying to any problem by asking "what do you think is the best solution?" I didn't give a buyer anything he didn't first ask for Smile

Ebay can drive you insane. I got to wait for a 99p item because the seller refuses to post other than recorded delivery. 99 bloody pence for Goodness sake. As I am back and forth all over the country until next week I have got to wait, rather than just stick the bloody thing in the post. If it doesn't turn up then I can live with 99p loss.

On my shop I've never had a returned item in over ten years but when I first started I recall selling a ticket for £450, it was in great condition and so I described it as mint, really was like new (I know better now). I was so annoyed and upset then the buyer returned without any advance warning just a letter that said something like "I don't call that mint please return my money".

I was angry then, mainly because I had already spent most the money, but now I think I would do the same, it's class ! Smile I mean what can you do other then do as said or keep both money and item.

If you complain to ebay they'll ban him, just say you fear for your safety. They can't risk doing nothing.

Much as I would love to do that, and it couldn't happen to a nicer guy. I wouldn't do anything so vindictive. he has 100% feedback and a rating ovet 2000 so i'll leave it at that.

I've been interested in reading this thread as I've been mulling over whether to sell football magazines through ebay. I've used ebay, as a buyer, on and off for many years but have given it a real hammering over the last few months. I've been disappointed with my experiences overall in terms of quality of items received compared to descriptions (the worst being writing on items when the seller has said no writing and one bundle that had an unidentifiable substance on two magazines that created stains on both after I removed it). As I write I am also trying to get a response from a seller - after three attempts - about a purchase I am still waiting around four weeks after paying for it. I realise there are good and bad people everywhere but I've definitely been put off buying from ebay.

Totally understand your problems. I perhaps sell more vintage football magazines in a year then anyone else. I won't say I don't buy some off ebay but not many now as I've seen it all in the past. And you know often it's not even the fault of the seller because they don't understand what condition people want these in.

It's very annoying finding the centre pages missing or players head clipped out and scribble etc. Even now as I source from private people I still have 10-20% of magazines I can't include on my site because of quality.

If you need any mags - http://matchdaymemories.com/shop/football-magazines.html

Stock of popular ones has been hit hard recently but I've managed to source about 4,000 I'm picking up at the weekend inc a complete set of Shoot Smile

I have been buying and selling on ebay for years without any serious problems.

Buying - I can't recall any instances where there was a problem with the seller or the item

Selling - I have come across one or two tw@ts but nothing that wasn't amicably sorted

The main thing that is putting me off continuing to sell on Ebay is the persistent attempt by Ebay in trying to eradicate small time private sellers and the fact that they now have the audacity to charge a final value fee on postage and packing.

Kickoff3pm: I would have some sympathy for the seller if he/she was unsure about how to grade their magazines. However, I always ask whether they have writing on/in them or bits cut out. When they then sell me something with writing after claiming there wasn't any it can grate. But you live and you learn I guess!

bisphamseasider: Ah yes, you've just listed other reasons that have put me off selling on ebay!

Really ? I bet that's to encourage people to include it in the price and give (false) free delivery. If you think about that area must be the one that gives them most work to do in terms of disputes and if you are giving "free delivery" you can't deduct it from the price of an item if it's returned.

Not often that surely, although I did once buy a complete set of Football Monthly from a woman. Not the cheapest mag, cheaper now then back then. When they arrived they all had punch holes, still got a lot of them.

As for selling, it's hard work because you really need to check every page. I can tell you the are a fair few kids who loved to draw glasses on Bobby Charlton or give him hair. And the cost of postage is killing single purchases.

But I love it, only this week I managed find a 1970 goal for a bloke who had a letter published back in it when a kid. I also supply a fair few reporters and family of ex-footballers, most recent Alan Hudson I think. But then I've been doing this for about 12 years now.

Yes, I think it basically is to encourage free posting but that sort of flies in the face of Ebay insisting sellers don't overcharge postage and packing to cover fees.

One of the problems lies with buyers from overseas where the postage can now be excessive (due to recent increases) and if a seller was previously charging at cost he is now going to make a loss. The seller is therefore more likely to bump up the postage but this will probably put potential buyers off.

Special delivery postage is another similar area.

I know a number of sellers who will no longer post abroad or offer any postage other than standard or economy rate. This is potentially providing a lesser service and no doubt goes against Ebay's overall selling policies.

So this is really crazy. Say you sold an item for 99p and the postage was £3.00 (could be more).

Free listing
paypal fees ? 45p
ebay fees ? 40p
packing 20p
act postage £2.50

Your time and effort earns you what ? 40p if that, some will make a loss I'm sure.
