I was given a strange little metallic plate recently, featuring a Celtic team group from the 1930s. It says 'Presented with Topical Times' on the back. I had thought it looked like a modern reproduction, possibly from a card. It's a bit too 'clean' and the gold lacquer finish is too shiny but I saw someting similar on eBay recently. If it is a modern reproduction it has been designed to look aged with some minor scratching and fading, but the scratches on mine look genuine. Has anyone seen this or similar? Anyone aware of 1930s Topical Times metal plates?

It's an original. It was issued by Topical Times in 1924.

One of a set of 6 metallic cards, the full set is:

Arsenal F.C.
Celtic F.C.
Everton F.C.
Rangers F.C.
Sheffield Wednesday F.C.
West Bromwich Albion F.C.

Thanks for that. I don't think it can be as early as 1924 though. Willie Cook for example was only at Celtic 1930-32, so that narrows the date right down.

Just did a bit of digging.... Sherlock

It's almost certainly a picture of Celtic's 1931 Scottish Cup winning side. The clue is in the picture in the shape of the Scottish Cup! The line-up on the back is the line-up from the final v Motherwell. And 1930-31 was the only season where Willie Cook and John Thompson were both at Celtic.

It could theoretically have been used by Topical Times a year or two later, but I'm sticking it down as 1931!

And my last post on this, probably. 5 of these 6 won major honours in 1931...

Arsenal F.C. 1931 League champions
Celtic F.C. 1931 Cup winners
Everton F.C. 1931 Second division champions
Rangers F.C. 1931 League champions
West Bromwich Albion F.C. 1931 FA Cup winners

Sheffield Wednesday F.C. included as 1930 League Champions?

Great research I'll take 1931 rather than Murrays 1924.

I'll update my database straight away.

Thanks

I had this set about 15 years back, and did an exchange with Stuart Marshall in Glasgow for some Junior items I required.
