We occasionally hear stories of progs that are unexpectedly rare or expensive (e.g. Boro v Cardiff 1962/63, Man Utd v Sheff Wed 1957/58... etc).

Is there a published list of the home programmes for each club that are particularly rare and therefore likely to be more expensive than standard prices of progs from that era? If not, I can imagine it could be useful so shall we start one? At a guess, there's probably no more than 10-15 per club from 1955 onwards that stand out?

I know there's a thread about issues of postponed matches but obviously not all of them are rare and there are bound to be others that are tough to find for different reasons (home friendlies, league deciders, last games in league...etc).

See image of rare Post-War Everton programmes as per the Toffee Pages book used by so many Evertonians as their reference.

I would say some of the considered rare ones are not as rare as you would think but its the base of it

Everton v Man Utd 1957/8 always seems to go for well over £100 but isn't listed on that page.

There aren't, in my opinion, too many Derby homes post-55 which I would consider particularly rare (other than the 4 page public practice matches up to 1965, which all are hard to find) but I've listed a few below.

One thing about Derby - compared to other clubs, there are comparatively few home friendlies to look for. Most of them not difficult to find. Aways are another matter!

54/5 Derby v Luton (lowest post-war attendance, match played on a Wed afternoon...VERY hard to locate)
55/6 Derby v Boston Utd FAC (I think most home fans tore their programme up in disgust at the 6-1 defeat!)
55/6 Derby v All Star XI (4 page issue)
55/6 Derby v Barrow, Oldham (both postponed issues)
59/0 Derby v Celtic (Friendly match not played - rumour has it a programme exists though I've never seen it nor one for sale)
61/2 Derby v AS Beziers (Fr)
62/3 Derby v Walsall, Portsmouth, Norwich (all 3 postponed issues)
70/1 Derby v Nottm Forest (postponed issue, January)
70/1 Derby v British Olympic XI (Fr 14.12.70)
71/2 Derby v Dundee Utd (Texaco Cup)
71/2 Derby v Airdrie (Texaco Cup Final)
74/5 Derby v Carlisle Utd (last game of the season, Championship Souvenir issue)
78/9 Derby v Zeljeznicar (Fr, s/s)
81/2 Derby v Blackburn
82/3 Derby v Sunderland (Fr, s/s)
85/6 Derby v Gillingham (FAC + s/s insert)

A list of Halifax Town post 1955 home programmes which i'd consider hard to get or expensive when they turn up, usually £200+

1955/56 Halifax v Derby
1958/59 Halifax v Mansfield Town s/s
1958/59 Public Practice Matches: Whites v Blues 9/8/58 & 16/8/58 Both single sheets
1964/65 Halifax v Hartlepools P/P (6 Mar) - Only 1 known to exist and in my collection, value must be 5K+ Laughing
1965/66 Halifax v Oldham (Fre) s/s, Bury (Fre) s/s
1966/67 Halifax v Bradford Park Ave (Fre) s/s
1967/68 Halifax v Ipswich (Fre) s/s

The Derby County newspaper styled programmes were sometimes accompanied by 4 page programmes. Were these given to the chosen few as they seem pretty difficult to get hold of.

I am surprised the Everton Rare List does not include:

Everton vs Leeds Utd 1968/69 (18 Feb Postponed Issue).

Sunderland v Notts County FA Cup 1972/73 £100 +
Sunderland v Aston Villas League Cup semi final 1962/63 £100 +
are the two obvious first team fixutes.
Other than these two, nothing stands out as really rare but some obscure friendly/reserve games do pop up know and again.

Yes - I've seen them listed as both "complimentary issues" and "directors issues". I think they were solely for those in the "VIP" areas who might not fancy having to have a newspaper out in front of them to check the lineups. It owuld never have done for Sam Longson's mates to get ink all over their fingers Smile
As far as I know, they were only printed for 71/2, 72/3 and 73/4 and not necessarily every match.
I've got a number of them in my collection but it's only since I came on here that I've read they were worth anything.
From my point of view (and I think I'm in the minority here!), these weren't for the general public so they don't count as 'programmes'. Nice to have, sure, but not core.

Question for Derby1884

The 1959/60 Charlton home game has been listed as having 2 different covers. Am I right in thinking one is extremely rare?

some useful posts - I'd say these sorts of lists are very useful for any collector who comes across programmes which don't fit into his/her collection. It would be good to compile one overarching file of them for reference (I imagine dealers have already done so), so if collectors are happy to post the hard-to-get lists referring to their clubs... I think for NUFC this doesn't extend much beyond 58/59 Chelsea pp, 60/61 Colchester away in the LC, 60/61 Spurs at home and 67/68 Man City at home, although I'd be happy to hear otherwise.

The only copies I've seen have the original date of February 14th blacked out and the rearranged date, Feb 24th, printed below.

I guess if you had a copy with just the original date then that would be the rare one.

Blackburn homes

59/60 Dirty Leeds
63/4 Chelsea
League cup single sheets apart from Barrow and Workington, but watch out for excellent condition Wrexham LC ss it was reproduced in the 90s by an unscrupolous Rovers collector.

Peterborough homes
Single sheet friendlies aginst many and Northants Senior Cup single sheets. Most of the full programmes are readily available and i have spares of most post 60/61 apart from the last couple of seasons if anyone needs any pm me.

Aways Carlisle and Hartlepool 60/61 very rare and are £100 plus.

Another good point of reference in identifying rare programmes would be the results of Auction sales. Most of these are posted online but there would be a bit of work involved in outsorting the rare ones.

TheMusic - Are you saying you are happy to act as a co-ordinator for this "project"? If so I would be happy to offer my services to review the results of one Auction House on a regular basis , say, Football Sports Auctions and post the findings. Let me know if you want me to do this.

If other members offer to take on other auction houses to share the workload, a useful reference list could be complied by adding these to members other submissions and which we could all access via this forum.

It will be interesting to see if and how this progresses.

Martin

Ummm... well, I guess it shouldn't be too much hassle to collate the answers on this thread and create an excel file that summarises the tough ones to find for each club. Christmas time would be an ideal time to spend an hour or two starting it off so I can do that, as long as it doesn't get out of control... Smile

I would hold off starting anything until we see if any other members offer to take on other auction houses. I think it should be "all or nothing".

Collating historical auction prices on certain items would be great but sounds time-consuming. If collectors only have time to let us know their basic awareness of their club's tricky issues, I'd suggest we still settle for that - I'd say it's better than nothing.

From a Wolves point of view a number of regular season issues from the mid 1980's would be in the difficult to obtain category, the home fixture with Brentford 1985-6 being a particularly difficult issue - print run of 800 for a crowd of 3,500.

Another 'rare' issue is the Charity Shield game between Wolves and WBA in 1954-55, usually costing £150+ when it appears. This price is generally dwarfed by the Wolves Chelsea from 1952-53 which rarely appears for sale and would cost inexcess of £500.
