Was just wondering if posters can remember the first game thay went to and anything thay found significant about it. My first game was Evertons opening fixture of the 61/62 season v Aston Villa ,it was a glourious summers day (funny how the sun always used to shine back then, Villa had a young center-forward makeing his Football League debut for them a certan Derek Dougan Yul Brynner hair cut et al and i became a big fan of his thereafter and though only 12years old at the time my mates and i would always go and se the Doog play wenever he was local.anyone else have a tail to tell from that all importent first game.

August 1972 Rovers v Sheffield United in The Watney Cup Final.
Same a Nozer it was a bloody hot evening and I loved every second of it especialy as we won.
As a youngster I thought we had won "THE" Cup and in the 5-6 games I saw the following season I kept wondering why I wasn't getting to see Man U or Liverpool. It was only at the end of the season when we got promotion the the 2nd division that I sussed the Rovers were not a top team. Too late a life long love affair had begun and even though I have probably seen us lose more than win I am still loving every second. Stupid game football isn't it.

Only thing I can think of is that the game was decided on pens. Was that it?

My mum worked at Fulham in the mid 1960s washing the shirts after the games. She got to know a lot of the players and always got freebie tickets, i was dragged along, no idea who against as had no interest as a 4 yr old. In hindsight why didnt my mum lose a few shirts, Bobby Robson, Johny Haynes et al. Although i do have a faded signature of his on a pair of old football boots

2001/2002
WBA V Wimbledon
Got an Albion kit, crowd of about 17,000 there only a handful from Wimbledon there, Albion created lots of chances, andWimbledon had a man sent off and they scored right in the last minute.

past pirate/nozer

Games involving Rovers and United in 72/3 Watney cup were Rovers 2 Wolves 0, Notts C 0 United 3, Burnley 0 Rovers 2, Peterbro 0 United 4, and the final Rovers 0 United 0.

So both teams reached the final without conceeding a goal - and Sheff United lost in the final without conceeding a goal in 90 minutes. Surely this has never happened before in a national competition.

regards, Mark

past pirate - were you in the open end or tote? I was in the open end and was surprised they had the penalty shoot out at that end. Long time ago now, but I cant remember a lot of Sheff U fans there Wink

Thanks for that Mark ,although i checked up on fixtures i would never have picked up on that one.Wolves had come stright from a Euro tour for that game ,so dont think thay were in the best of nick ( after all these years still looking for an excuse for there poor performance that day) prob beaten by a beter team who wanted it more on the day.Noz aka Molineux Phil.

Used to watch Leyland Motors from as soon as I could walk, as my dad was chairman. This meant that I didn't get to got to a professional game until much later. I remember going to a schoolboy international in about '81 at Wembley, and I wore an England youth player's shirt that my dad had got me, and it looked like a dress!!

I also remember going to watch Forest v Man City 13th. March '82. I remember meeting the late, great Cloughie, as my uncle was mates with Ronny Fenton, and my idol at the time, Shilts. One of the happiest days of my life, never stopped going on about it for months!!

My first game was on 5th December 1970, Aberdeen v Cowdenbeath. We won 7-0 and I was 6 years old and from then on hooked. Joey Harper scored a hat-trick, and we went on to finish second to Celtic. If we had beaten them in the second last game of the season, we might just have pipped them and thus ended their eventual nine-in-a-row.
41 years later and I'm still a Don, albeit displaced to Hull, East Yorkshire!
