Badges take up a lot less space than programmes. Less people collect them so vast majority of the hobby is still affordable.

Much easier to 'make your own rules' as to what you collect, whereas most programme collectors make it really hard for themselves by needing whole seasons, or all of their teams issues for a certain period.

Sometimes there's the nice suprise of finding something you never knew existed, whereas with programmes it is usually fairly obvious what has been produced.

I know badge collecting is very widespread around the world, it's one of the biggest hobbies in the USA I think. But how do know what you are collecting ?

I mean a football programme has an event with a date and a direct link to it's place in your clubs history. I think some badges can be tracked so you can collect in sets but how does the person who just paid £800 for that badge know it wasn't made in China last week ?

I could get a 100 of them turned out no problem at all and only for a few quid each. In fact isn't that what people are doing right now with all these match day badges ? The is no accreditation or link to the club at all as I see it.

So yes I can understand people collecting old badges when they know they exist but for me it's just too risky to pay more then a few bob.

That's the bit I can't quite get my head around, I guess its the equivalent of unofficial or pirate programmes with no official link to the club/country involved.

You are collecting what someone decided to order from a badge maker a couple of weeks ago.

That said I suppose there are collectors who only collect older "official" badges.

Some badge collectors won't touch match badges with a barge pole. Personally I love them. My club (Palace) often go two years between producing a single new badge in the club shop - it's getting unofficial badges like match badges that keeps it current.

As for the vintage stuff, it's easy to tell which is original and which is a modern remake - bit like reprinted or repro programmes.

Oh and as for programmes, it's often the old 'Pirate' ones that are more collectable - Palace v Real Madrid friendly 1962 - original still worth £1 - £2. Pirate £20 min.

I can vouch for this as being fact. I had to stop collecting badges as it was becoming impossible to get from my front door to the car for women, they were everywhere, they wouldn't leave me alone. Since selling-up my badge collection there is barely a woman to be seen.

I may start collecting again Sad

I am with you on this... I can't get my head around there being 4 varieties of an unofficial match badge for a Championship game for instance.
I can understand if it is an important game but I will only buy a matchday badge if it is at a match that I have attended as a souvenir.
As for investment... Maybe 30 years down the line they may increase in value but you only have to watch Ebay to see how little modern ones fetch.
Horses for courses of course and don't want to get personal!

It is unbelievable Valky, I definitely back you on this one, I used to have to fight the women off with a stick (from my 1971-1985 stick collection) Nod
