I'm considering concentrating more on non-league programmes for my future collection - they just somehow seem more interesting. What I want to know is, what do other non-league collectors collect?

I have a couple of hundred Congleton Town programmes from when I lived there and went to the games. I also have quite a few non-league programmes from matches that I've attended.

I could always try and collect one from as many clubs as possible, or collect programmes from a certain year? The possibilities are endless, that's the problem!

I collect Grantham programmes
But also pick-up a programme from any other non-league games I attend

Also have around 14,000 non-league programmes in stock as part of my research project below. Ideally I'd like to have the final home game of each club for each season

One from as many clubs as you can is fun to do, more or less endless and (or at least used to be) a comparatively inexpensive branch of the hobby.

Nowadays, with so many new clubs and name changes (I count a name change as a "new club") it's hard to keep up but, unlike collecting one particular club's issues, the parameters are whatever you choose them to be. For instance, I include English, Scottish and Welsh clubs but nothing from further afield.

Space is an issue - I'm up to about 2,400 different clubs and that's a lot of storage.

Do you have them catalogued at all? It would be good to have some kind of list of the pyramid, but do you simply check your list to see if you already have one by that club before buying?

Storage doesn't need to be an issue, just build one of these in the garden Smile

Ideal to store a few 1,000 programmes

Yes, they're all on an Excel spreadsheet so I can sort alphabetically by home or away team or by season. I also list the competition the fixture was for.

I'd certainly recommend collecting non-league for the enjoyment it brings.
That, sadly, isn't the main thing for so many collectors now (not a fact...just my impression) - so don't go into it looking to build an investment portfolio!

If you don't mind me asking, is the 2,400 over a wide time period or just recent programmes?

All eras, really.

Earliest is from 1912, got about 40 clubs pre-war. Another 80 or so from the 1940s.

1980s - 1,216 clubs....but, of course, those were the days when even the smallest of clubs would issue something.

I'm a bit out of touch with how prices are now for older non-lge issues.
They used to be discounted at some 50-60% of general lge prices but there will be people here who would be more in the know than me now.

Did the one per club a few years ago and also where possible picked up a club badge , i had to visit the ground though not just buying from collectors or sifting through boxes, had to be on the day, some great days out and good memories as regards (the programmes seem more interesting) mmm not sure on some counts as some were awful publications , but bare in mind most of these clubs are just about surviving so its certainly understandable and worth a pound or so.
