My main interest is in collecting Manchester United European programmes.
This is interesting in some ways but can be frustrating in others. Some European clubs do not seem to produce an official match programme for the Champions League fixtures. Instead the closest thing to a programme that you can seem to get is a newspaper-style publication.
I have sometimes bought these but they're not the same are they? They are just an alternative piece of memorabilia, I guess. |

I don't know mate, I've got one from when we played Koln in the Fairs Cup in 1963, I know it's not a programme as such but I still see it as a programme. If that makes sense.
P.S. Theres a pic of it on my Facebook page below if you're interested. |

Coming back to this point, some European matches I can only find "pirate" programmes.
Do people generally buy these to fill the gap in their collection if no official programme was produced? |

I buy pirate programmes or souvenir programmes from newspapers where required. For one fixture I bought an official team sheet because neither a pirate programme nor souvenir newspaper was produced. |

The newspaper type editions from the european matches are quite 'annoying' sometimes, you have to collect them as they are part of the collection, but they are awkward to store and often have to be stored seperate from your normal sized programmes because of their size.
You have to have them though as they sometimes are collected as the the programme from the game, as well as the pirate programmes, so sometimes you may have two or three variations from each European game.
I tend to keep the newspaper editions in a seperate pile in the programme room and just have to make a note in the book how its stored, daft really i know! |

The answer was "hardly any"...as most of the stuff still 'lives' at my parents in my old room |

If there wasn't an official programme, then a copy of the team sheet is the next best thing. A 'pirate' issue comes next.
Newspapers are little more than an interesting addition to the collection. No way can they be classed as a substitute programme.
If there was a printers strike prior to a United home game and no programme printed, would you add the Mirror, Sun or whatever to your programme collection just because it had the probable teams in it? |

I take your point MUCC.
However, some of these newspaper issues are solely about the match.
In that they only contain match information, they are just in a newspaper style format.
Obviously some though are like you say, one page of info in a whole local newspaper! |

Yes agreed.
Some are certainly akin to the much missed Manchester Evening News and Evening Chronicle 'specials' and also those from the other regional newspapers from around the country.
With a number of european clubs failing to produce an actual programme, certainly in years gone by, the local newspaper would produce a souvenir issue, which is collected as a substitute programme.
I have numerous such issues in my collection, but never regarded them as a programme.
Today, it is a lot easier to fill that no programme gap with a team sheet and to be honest, the team sheet could well replace the programme with many collectors who struggle for space, more so now, when many programmes are simply a waste of money and many are beginning to stop buying them.
For collectors living in cities, the opportunity of picking up pre and after match issues of say the Spanish and Italian dailies from specialist shops can be profitable, considering the mark up on what the dealers charge. They, however, I suppose have to carry them back from abroad1 |

I dont think we are talking about the sun, mirror or star as such but newspaper 'type' editions that are dedicated to the game with the team line up printed inside.
As long as the team line up is there and its dedicated to a game without a 'programme' I class it as the programme to the game
Each to their own i suppose. |
