Knowing the amount of knowledge that is on this forum, I wonder if I could ask for a bit of help.

This photo is on the wall of one of the lounges at Portsmouth, Montgomery of Alamein (former President of Portsmouth) being introduced to Jimmy Dickinson.

My query is: who is the player between Jimmy Dickinson and Alf Ramsey?

Also, if anyone can identify which England game it is that would be a bonus.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks Guys, I knew the Forum would not let me down!

I also spotted a Twitter post from the Charlton Athletic museum, who I follow, saying that they have Derek Ufton's shirt from this game on show in the museum.

Shame we don't have Jimmy Dickinson's shirt.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Texas Ranger, thanks for that very interesting article about Derek Ufton, I was sorry to see he died 3 months after the interview.

You’re welcome.

It seems he had a very full and interesting life. I always hold folks like him in very high esteem although to be honest I don’t know that much about him. But anybody that plays multiple sports at the levels he did is a special talent.

I can tell you a bit more about Derek Ufton. Later in his life (about 1976 or 77) he was playing club cricket for Dartford (Kent), who had Graham Dilley in their ranks. One Sunday they were playing at my club (Warlingham - Surrey) in an all-day Sunday friendly match (11:30-7:30). Dartford to Warlingham - about 30-40 miles, about an hour or more to commute. We were a bit nervous about Dilley in the oppo - but when they turned up, we found he'd been picked by Kent for a John Player Sunday League match. We breathed a sigh of relief. Well, I did, anyway!

Anyway, Dartford batted first and Derek Ufton (their wicket-keeper) opened the batting. Very amusingly (for us), he was skittled in the first over for a duck by our young quickie (Robin) and poor old Derek spent the rest of the day moaning about Robin being a "chucker".

Back then I knew nothing about Derek's football career, I wish I had as, in the bar, I would have asked him about all sorts of things, including his one cap. He may well have told me to go forth and multiply. But I will never know.
