I always thought modern day Footballers had trendy names, but here’s one with a difference.

I imagine his father had experienced the hell of Verdun during WW1.

All I can find out is that he was a an Inside Forward and made 2 appearances during the 1938/9 season.

Hopefully he too survived the next war 1939/45.

This is a Albert Wilkes & Son , Postcard Size , Real Photograph.

I would love to know more if there are any Rams fans out there who can add to this…

According to Breedon's "Derby County the complete record" he was born at Edmonton on 22/6/1916 (which probably backs up your name theory) and died in Ware in January 1987 (so he certainly survived WW2)
His only two games for Derby were in February 1938 (so the 1937/38 season), having previously been with Aston Villa from September 1936 to November 1937. I can find no mention of him in either Derby's war time fixtures or post war, but apparently he joined Southend in May 1948.
As you say an interesting and rather haunting name

Thank you so much, that’s fascinating.

I wonder if he ever played for Villa?

I guess someone will know?

Cheers,

Ian

This link shows that Verdun Aubrey Jones did not make a first team appearance for Villa.

And he didn't play for Southend either, and I also checked wartime records for all 3 clubs shown and there's nothing.
