Saturday 30th April 1955
Division III South
Crystal Palace 1 (Tilston) Bristol City 2
Gate: 14,425
Well done to Brizzle who finished 9 points clear at the top with 70 points, only the second time since the war that a club reached that total. Palace were 20th. The article by Cyril Spiers is worth a read, the figures may have changed but the problems haven't. Though "Entertainment Tax" was crippling and unfair - football was treated so differently from other sports. Typical. |

Coventry City 1 Derby County 1
By this time, having won the 2nd Division and with Brian Clough starting to gather national media attention, Derby were somewhat in demand and so they agreed to the invitation to provide the opposition for Brian Hill's testimonial match. Hill, a defender, joined Coventry in 1957 and ended up playing almost 250 games for the club.
28th April, 1959
Redhill v Wealdstone.
Hastily compiled single sheet for this rearranged Athenian League fixture.
Redhill would finish at the foot of the table with Wealdstone losing out on goal average to Barnet for the title.
Given how important this match seems to have been for the visitors, I always wondered what the score was - anyone know?
 |
Wealdstone won 4-2; Redhill were 2-1 up at one stage. Farrell got a hat-trick for Wealdstone (i got this off the British Newspaper Archive website, there's not much else on there apart from Evans scored Wealdstone's first goal in the first half) |

Football League - South
Aldershot 0 Crystal Palace 6 (Robson, Wilson, Ferrier 2, A Dawes, Smith)
Gate: c 5000
The penultimate match of the 30 in this truncated season saw Palace stroll to a comfortable win over a Shots side fielding at least 9 guest players. The Palace side was more settled with possibly just one guest, centre forward R Ferrier who hit 2 of the goals. I've researched him as best I can and think he is Ron Ferrier, a Manchester United player of the 1930's, who joined Oldham and played for them in the late 30's and in the early years of the war, then Palace for this season (19 goals in 25 games) and then Oldham late WW2 and briefly after. From there he became coach at Grimsby in about 1947. Can anyone confirm this is the same player please?
Incidentally, Aldershot's "Queen of Beauty" Phyllis Dixey was appearing locally soon after this game. I checked her out and I would imagine she was pretty popular among the men at the time. She is worth a Google! |
Hi, Yes that is the same Ron Ferrier who played for Oldham, i've found a match report from 1945 on the BNA which confirms this. If you'd like me to send it to you, let me know (I would post it on here but i can never make it a readable size!) |

30th April, 1951
Leicester v Derby in a 'grand testimonial match' for their former full back Billy Frame who had made over 200 appearances for the Foxes between 1934 and 1950. Mr.Frame passed away in 1992.
