Ive recently acquired a programme from the mid60s signed by the team in pencil, normally the autographs i collected were in pen. Although I randomly ran into the Liverpool team in the 00s and only had a pencil on me, so ended up getting their scribbles in pencil, that’s another story!

Anyhow got me thinking is there more value in autographs on programmes being in ink, or is it irrelevant ? surely back in the day pencil was the way to go !?

I've always disliked autographs on programmes - on the odd occasion I've found any of my old programmes signed I've always upgraded them to clean programmes, just as I would with any programme with writing on.

I can appreciate though that is not the normal point of view however I really can't understand these modern signed items in marker pen or felt tip - especially where you see 50-60 year old programmes signed decades later at player reunions by old pros

I think what matters with autographs for me is whether they are legible or even decipherable! Obviously pen is usually clearer and therefore preferable. Modern squiggles with heavy marker pens are meaningless and I think worthless, you also see this stuff on shirts and wonder who 'did' them.
Personally I collect Wales auto'ed programmes, but like the signatures over the team lines or on the personal portraits, not on the cover. I keep these auto'ed programmes separate and and have clean copies as well !
