From Bill Lane’s Programme notes, 4/10/1952 Brighton v Reading.
Quoting, Charlie Buchan. ‘Too often nowadays the policy of the team is dictated by the manager. In my opinion, it is a tactical blunder. It leads to the broth being spoilt by an excess of cooks. Many of our league sides fail, I am sure, because they are trying to carry out plans beyond their capabilities.’
‘How right you are Charlie’.

Earlier in the piece Bill said ‘ Since I have been at the Goldstone, I have not had one tactical talk with the players’

It might also be noted that in the next 6 seasons he achieved two runners-up spots and one title.

From a letter to the editor
Manchester City Programme 29/10/1977
‘I am attempting to build up a comprehensive collection of programmes for every game played by City from Hyde Road days to date. At present I am having trouble with the pre 1950 section of my collection and would appeal to any elderly City fans who can help me. I am willing to pay 50p each for any pre-war home or away and 5p each for any dated 1940-1950.’
I wonder how successful this appeal was and if the offer still stands.

The Reference to Soccer Star reminds me of when I as a very foolish 10 year old who placed an advert in Soccer Star offering to exchange 4 Leeds programmes for every programme received.
I received sacks full of mail of programmes in returm and there was no way I could meet the offer. My parents had to spend a small fortune sending stuff back and explaining I was a 10 year old boy but still received a couple of 'threatening ' letters warning of legal action if the Leeds programmes were not sent.
