Freight Rover Trophy 86/7

Are there any Freight Rover Trophy experts on the forum?

For the 86/7 season, the Chesterfield v Middlesbrough programme indicates it was a “Group 6’ fixture. However, Wikipedia shows that both teams were in ‘Group 1' along with Doncaster Rovers.

Would anybody have a definitive answer to which group they were actually in or could maybe point me in the right direction?

From what I have looked up in my record books, Group 1 consisted of Middlesbrough, Chesterfield and Doncaster Rovers. Group 6 consisted of York City, Darlington and Rochdale. Hope that this helps.

To confuse matters still further, I have both the York v Darlington and the Darlington v Rochdale programmes. The York programme calls it a preliminary round and doesn't list any group name, whereas the Darlo one calls it Round 1 on the cover, but Preliminary Round inside, and lists the Group as being Group 7, with Doncaster, Chesterfield and Boro being in Group 6 (Group 1 being Burnley, Bolton and Blackpool)!

Certainly a can of worms there!!! The information I eventually got the information from was the 'Playfair Football Annual 87/88'. Inside it states that there was to be 16 Group stages of three teams (8 North and 8 South). Group games were also named as Preliminary Round. Following from the Group Stages, Round 1, Quarter Finals, Semi-finals, Final.
However, the groups of three teams are not grouped as Group 1, 2 etc only assuming that thy are in Group order.

The Daily Telegraph Football Year Book 1987/88 lists the groups and results from the 86/87 competition.
Northern Section, Group 6
Middlesbrough 3 Doncaster 1
Chesterferfield 2 Middlesbrough 1
Doncaster 0 Chesterfield 0

Just speculating, but the Middlesbrough v Doncaster game was the opening game of the competition, hence it might have been assumed to be Group 1?

Thanks for all the valued replies. It shows the genuine camaraderie within the forum.

It does look like Boro participated in Group 6 but it was Wikipedia that threw me, indicating Group 1.

also has the game marked down as 'Preliminary round Northern Section Group 1. Very confusing indeed!!
Another link statto.com has a comprehensive list of group games with results also has Middlesbrough, Doncaster and Chesterfield as in Group 1.
