Manchester United v Bolton Wanderers 1963 friendly in Cork

One of my collecting habits is rare friendlies.

I would like to know it's current value as I can't find for the life of me when it last became available at auction and I have been looking!

Also does anyone know the background as to why this one off friendly took place in Cork?

I'm thinking it was probably a thank you to Cork's Schoolboys' league which may have provided the English League a source of up and coming talent?

This four pager has team changes inside. Can anyone make out the name under Crerand?

On the Bolton team that day I notice what must of been a young Francis Lee scoring a typical brace of pens! And also a great unsung hero of mine Freddie Hill scoring an O.G.

Any information about this match and the programmes value is appreciated.

Totally random thought - its not Pat Crerands autograph is it?

Its obviously a different pen than used by the chap who did the team changes/goalscorers.

Looking closely at the team page maybe it was only 1 pen from Lee from his two goals and was it Hill or Stanley who scored the O.G. ?

Quite a few friendlies (particularly English club v English club) were played in Ireland during the particularly bad winter of early 1963. Ireland didn't get the Big Freeze quite as bad as the UK. The English league programme was decimated for most of January and February.

United played three friendlies in Ireland that month due to the bad weather in England.

02/02/63 Coventry City 2-2 Att: 18,000 at Glenmalure Park Dublin.

13/02/63 Bolton Wanderers 4-2 Att: 6,000 at Flowers Lodge Cork.

19/02/63 Bohemians/Shamrock Rovers Select 4-0 Att: 20,000 played in Dublin.

It was also Paddy Crerand's debut I believe. The going rate is around £350 so with the autograph added it may be a bit more though this copy does look a little creased.

I know it doesn't really matter but it's Flower Lodge rather than Flowers Lodge. Nit-picking I know, but lots of us collectors/stattos like to be spot on!

Haven't been on this forum much lately.

It is a rare programme as has been stated. A number of games were played here as we escaped the Big Freeze in Britain. Coventry v Wolves was also played in Cork and is an equally rare programme if perhaps not quite as valuable.

Nothing has ever appeared for the game sin Dublin and I think it is unlikely anything was produced.

I was at all of those matches in Dublin and no programes were produced recently I found post cards that I wrote at the time because of no progs with team lineups etc
