Been offered a Nationwide League 2003-04 runners up medal, can anyone give a valuation please or where I can find something similar ?

I have found an auction from 2012 where a 99/00 Burnley one sold for £650, is this still about right or would the value have increased/ decreased etc ?

thanks in advance

Bought a 2003/04 Division One Play Off Final at Cardiff medal from an auction house a few years back for £150. Thought it was a bargain at the time as I was prepared to pay more.

Another one has come up at another auction since by cannot remember how much it went for

this is a bit confusing

You started the thread by saying you have been offered the medal but needed a valuation
Now you are saying that it is more than you have been offered

Not that it's my business but are you a buyer or a seller?

He's potentially a buyer - presume he's been offered the chance to buy it for, say £500 or so.

I too have the Palace one from that season (2003/04). To my knowledge the difference between the ones the players and officials got, and the ones that Nationwide had a few sets of, was whether or not it had a fitting and ribbon.

Funnily enough 2003/4 was the year that quite a few of these are floating about for. Must have been several presentation sets issued.

The WBA one in the photo has the fitting and ribbon, which IMO makes it a players one. I'd say for a medal with the ribbon and fitting, you could add at least £100 to a typical £200ish value now for the 'sponsors issue' (maybe less for some of the typically less supported lower division teams)

Below is a pic of a Palace player wearing his medal (Neil Shipperley). I have a clear large version of a photo just like this one on my wall and you can see his medal clearly in it. His medal is exactly the same as my 'sponsors' version, apart from his having a ribbon and fitting.

A sponsors set of the 11 medals for that season was sold by Graham Budd for just £300.

http://grahambuddauctions.co.uk/BidCat/detail.asp?SaleRef=GB20&LotRef=250

Which was a good bargain for the purchaser if you could then break it up and get £100+ per medal.

Apologies if I'm way off the mark, but that's my understanding and opinion.

If anyone ever gets a 'players' one from that season (any team) ie with ribbon and fitting, then let me know as I'd happily buy it for £100 - £200 (just for the ribbon) so that I could have my Palace 'sponsors issue' one adapted!

EDIT:

If you go to ebay.co.uk and search for 'Nationwide Medal' under ' completed listings', then quite a few come up, mostly 'sponsors issue' ones (ie no ribbon). The prices realised are as follows:-

Norwich 2003/4 Champions (sponsor issue no ribbon) 19 bids, £112

Bury 96/97 Champions (with ribbon) best offer accepted (under £399)

Hull 2003/04 Runners up (sponsor issue no ribbon) £34.99 buy it now (bargain!!)

Norwich 2003/04 Champions (sponsor issue no ribbon) £39.99 buy it now bargain from bobfrankandelvis

2001/02 Medal with ribbon - £200 (1 bid)

Doncaster 2003/04 (sponsors issue no ribbon) £39.99 buy it now bargain (BF&E)

WBA 2003/04 sponsor issue. no ribbon, poor condition, £39.99 buy it now

Torquay 2003/04 sponsor issue, no ribbon £29.99 buy it now

So.....these are not all that rare (particularly 2003/04 ones), and lovely for fans of these clubs to be able to get hold of! If it is a version with the fitting and ribbon, then it is a 'proper' one and worth much more than 'just' a set made for a sponsors presentation gift

Apologies if theres confusion.

I have been offered this item along with a shirt, I know the rough value of the shirt and what i'm prepared to pay but have no idea of the value of the medal,

I did say the valuation given by auctioneer was less than "I was offered it for" as in I have been offered these items for a higher price than that even allowing for the shirt as well I think the asking price I have been offered is a touch on the high side.

I am not looking to sell it on if I decide to buy it or not, it will be for my collection, it has come from a known player although the shirt is from a different player

What I was trying to say in my long winded reply, was that I believe with the ribbon that it would have been a players one (which you also believe and know the provenance of it),

....and that with the ribbon, it is worth a fair bit more than one that is just like a huge coin without the fitting or ribbon.

I'd say £300ish, maybe £400 as it was a players, with the ribbon etc.

my opinion is as follows

last year I sold a Swansea medal awarded to lee Jenkins

he had an official football league medal in the old style 600 /800 pounds

he had a sponsers medal, with ribbon, given to him on pitch 200/300

also given to various vips, companies was a presentation set given by the sponsers , which no doubt has been split up, and as such has no ribbon 150/180

I hope this explains my view on the situation

That's very interesting Robert - thanks!

It would have been 1999/2000 that Swansea won Division 4 (or whatever it was called then) (so during the Nationwide sponsorship), and I had no idea there would have also been 'proper' old style medals issued then.

This probably explains why quite a few (Nationwide) medals are floating around the resale market - if the players had both the 'proper' gold ones, as well as the version with the sponsor on, then I guess they'd be less sentimental about the sponsor one.

Very informative this forum!
