I have just done a swap for one of my programmes for this autograph book.
I think it's quite nice as at least three of the players this was their Full Debut seasons in the 1st team for United,
Duncan Edwards
Tommy Taylor
Dennis Violet.
It is a transitional season because some of the old guard Jack Rowley Jack Crompton Stan Pearson John Aston snr and Allenby Chilton and Henry Cockburn are on it as well.
I can also see David Pegg Mark Jones Roger Byrne John Berry Jackie Blanchflower Fred Goodwin .
So I've recognised most of them.
Can anyone help with the two signatures between John Aston and Dan Gibson and to the left of Roger Byrne towards the top of the page looks like a Johnny and the 2nd one begins with C ?
Also the one under book fold to the left of the page just above G Clayton.
These three I can't make out any answers please?

There is only one signature below John Aston and Don not Dan Gibson which is Harry McShane. Harry had a son called Ian who was crap at football but became a well known actor-Lovejoy for one character. |

What a nice set of autographs you've got there 'hydemaine'
I think you have a few reserves on there as well who didn't quite make the grade at United.
One of them which I see you have was a young Scottish Lad I remember seeing play for the reserves Bryce Fulton who has autographed towards the bottom of your book.
He also must have been in his first season in 1953.
Never made the first eleven but went on to play a lot of games for Plymouth Argyle If I remember.
Good player but such was United's endless stream of talent back then he never quite made it.
You also have Ian Greaves which you haven't mentioned he became Bolton Wanderers Manager.
Thank You for sharing.
David. |

Sorry 'hydemaine' I keep looking at your book and finding different reserve players who didn't quite make it.
The 'G Clayton' you have is Gordon Clayton a young Goalie who was Duncan Edwards best mate.
They came from the Midlands together and joined United together and lodged together when apprentices in Manchester.
So again 1953 seems to be the significant year for new United players who have signed your book.
I only saw him play a couple of times for United I think in 1957? maybe against West Bromwich Albion or Wolves ? (memory fails me) although he had featured regular in the same Youth team as Duncan.
I think he missed being on the Munich Plane as a reserve because of injury.
He was a pallbearer at Duncan Edwards's funeral in Dudley.
Your book is bringing back a lot of memories for me. |

Hi Charlie mitten
Thanks for replying. Also because I wasn't around at this time it's
good to hear from someone who actually saw these player's for real.
I'm made up that the autograph book is bringing back memories for you
hopefully good one's?
Thanks for sharing your experiences with us
Regards
Dave.

Great set of autographs and many of the players I admired from afar In my early years. My eyesight is not very good but the signature under the fold in the book could be Liam or Billy Whelan. Thanks for the wonderful memories you have shared. |

Hi beaudog thank you for your comments.
Yes I do think it's Liam (Billy) Wheelan under the fold.
Yet another player in this book who made his professional debut for United
in 1953 and one of the eight to die at Munich.
I have seen United autograph books before with many of the same in it but personally I think this one stands out a little as there's many of the young lads in it just starting out for United in 1953 it's the start of the Busby Babes some made it and others didn't. |

Thanks for the information pafcprogs.
I note that interestingly he played his 1st game for Plymouth on the 15th Feb 58. That's just a few days after Munich. I would have thought United would have held onto as many of the squad at that time. Or maybe he had already gone to Argyle and that was earlier than Munich ? |

According to Rothmans, he signed for Plymouth in August 1957. |

Does anyone know who the 'Eddie' is above Duncan Edwards signature?
It doesn't look like later Eddie Colman signatures. |

Hello 'hydemaine' I think that is Eddie Lewis you have there.
Yet another youngster who didn't quite make the grade at United.
I think he went on to play for West Ham United and other London clubs possibly Leyton Orient. |

Thanks for that Pete.
I wonder if you have any action pics of one player who facinates me in the auto book and that's Allenby Chilton.
I read about him and what a story. 1945 British Commando storming the beaches of Normandy on D-Day!.. roll on 3 years.... 1948 playing in the FA Cup final for United v Blackpool ! |
