College Grove hosted a number of representative games over the years. One, which sticks in my memory was the Pilkington Shield semi final in which Medicals of Northumberland who beat Old Centralians of
Gloucester on 23 rd March 1996.

I remember the day was cold and I stewarding in my usual position at the entrance of the stand when a man wearing a formal dress shirt and bow tie coupled with Bermuda shorts and flip-flops staggered in, with a pint glass perilously poised in hand. He swayed up and down the front of the stand, blocking the view of the game for the people behind him. I went to ask him to sit down and was met with “My brother’s playing in this game” in a drunken slur.

However he sat down only to stand back up once I had turned away. It
became a game of cat and mouse; each of my requests for him to sit
down were met with his drunken response of “My brother’s playing in
this game” until the final time, when I asked him to sit down and I didn’t give him a chance to comment, saying “I know your brother is playing in the game”, to which he replied, bright as a button and without a trace of being half cut, “Do you know him?” I fell apart laughing whilst he exited the stand in the direction of the bar.

I don't know much about this game off hand. The Lancashire team included someone called Wakefield and on the replacement bench for Yorkshire was David Baldwin who later joined Wakefield, toured with England (without ever getting capped) and is now one of the coaches at Yorkshire Carneige.

Sadly we never hosted any of the full Welsh Internationals like the other three Welsh league clubs, on account of Somerton Park being so shabby.

We regularly hosted the U21s and down though, here's a nice ticket from one such occasion ...

Plus of course we hosted the Newport Wasps speedway team from 1964 through to 1977 ...

Lastly a schools match from the 1940s ...

Programme for the 1st Baseball World Cup/Series held at The Shay, Halifax

Great Britain (England) & The United States were the only participants. This turned out to be the gold medal clincher as GB won 4-0 to make it 3-1 overall in a 5 test series.

Here's an International League Match between England and Scotland from 1941.

8 pages and a lot more content than Blackpool's wartime league and cup programmes.

Page 2 has an article and appeal for the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund.

The article is headed 'One of our Aircraft did not Return'.

Thanks, I'm glad I asked. My dad was in the RAF and was training then, he got married in December 41 and was posted to India and Burma and came home in 1946 when he saw his son (my big brother) for the first time, aged 4.

And that's reminded me of this:-

Selhurst Park, Jan 1940 - England v The Army - only half a programme in a very tatty state - but it goes with the wonderful picture below from the same day

My dad was also in the RAF and spent time in the Middle East and North Africa.

I will scan a copy of page 2 when I return from my jaunt to Scotland to watch the Pool at St Johnstone.
