Based on certain posts/posters over the last few months, and the apparent sensitive nature of some people on here, it is sometimes not always clear if people are on a wind up mission or just plain rude and arrogant.

With this in mind, I feel that emoticons or smilies are sometimes a necessary tool to convey the writer's feelings or intended tone and thus perhaps avoid confrontation.

I agree they can be overdone though but do not see this as a big issue.

I agree. Sometimes a tongue in cheek remark can wind people up the wrong way. A little Smile can defuse the situation. For goodness sake, it's the internet , hardly the end of the world.

Completely agree Bispham, the addition of a simple "smiley" can alter the entire tone of a post and thus prevent unnecessary offence being taken / pointless arguments occurring.

Because you can't hear the tone of somebody's voice in a reply, they're an important tool in avoiding such mishaps on the net.

Especially if you're a tongue-in-cheek type with a cheeky sense of humour. Wink
