What are your views on unused tickets ? Highly collectable/sought after or do people turn their nose up at them, the same way some collectors dislike programmes from binders. Not match used so not an legit item ?

To me a ticket is a ticket whether its used or not. Problem is todays match tickets you can't tell if they have been used or not as a lot of clubs now have electronic machine readers.

Without a doubt highly collectable. For example an unused Cup final ticket is far more rare than a used one and always sells at a premium and in my experience the same rule applies to most tickets.

If nothing else logic tells you that must be the case as it would be pretty easy to make the unused one look like it was used surely so a strange question?

Always prefer an unused to a used, particularly if the ticket design extends into the counterfoil.

As someone else said, these days tickets have barcodes and therefore less and less of them are being torn and remain complete after scanning.

Modern day you cannot tell the difference but I have, if possible, tried to get unused in preference to used. This is especially true of away European games in the 60's and 70's as they did not have perforations and instead the ticket was partly torn on entry. It depended on the person at the door how much was therefore missing! A complete one has to be worth more than one with a portion missing. Again, supply and demand would suggest unused should be worth more as they are rarer. However, some collectors do not seem to have any preference.

I'm happy with either, used or unused, and will always try and obtain both examples where possible.

They do always look nicer with the counterfoil still attached though in my opinion, what with it then being a "complete" ticket.
So I'd say overall, an unused ticket is more desirable to me as a collector.

My biggest peeve of all is the single card style tickets that were often issued pre 1980s, which bore no perforated counterfoil.

So because it had no removable stub, the fashion was for the gate chap to simply tear the bugger in half, thus completely destroying the ticket.

(Although there were times where other gate operators would merely clip the corner, which I don't mind at all)

So I'd only pay a nominal amount for one of these, with it only being half a ticket - but I'd happily pay ten or more times that for an unspoiled example, which I often have.

As shown here ...

Blackpool (H) League Cup 1967/8 ...

Hereford (H) FA Cup 1969/0 ...

(Corner Clipped) Shrewsbury (H) Welsh Cup 1979/0 ...

The thing about unused/complete tickets (when you go back a few years) is that they are often unused/complete because they were unsold and a large batch was subsequently discovered. As such these tickets were not used by punters at the match which is what I think Wullie was hinting at in the original post.

Personally I'll take what I can get, with a modest preference for complete/unused.

Wembley cup final tickets 1970s/1980s are a bit more complicated. There is the strip torn off at the turnstile, but another strip I believe that is torn off when you make the purchase from the club. So two different sets of complete tickets to chase .

Wullie, I've seen those 70s & 80s Wembley tickets with three additional strips mate, so any idea who tore the third counterfoil off?

Was it Wembley before issuing to the clubs to sell maybe?

I'm just curious really.
Those 70s & early 80s designs are my favourite of all the Wembley designs over the years.

Although being a Newport fan, naturally I don't have any in my stash!
lol
