has anyone found a gem when buying a job lot from anywhere. I bought a job lot of programmes at auction and found a 1970s Norwich town friendly against two local football teams one was Norwich city and I got about £38. so I got my money back just with that one programme |

Purchased a Grimsby collection a few years back (70s onwards) and discovered the Blyth Spartans v Grimsby FA Cup prog from the 73/4 season. Rare little 4 pager that I thought I would never own....value would be upwards of £75. |

I bought a job lot of programmes - we are talking three van loads here - from a former employee of Maybank Press back in 1986.
Cost me £250 in total - all programmes in pristine condition but included quite a few so-called pulped postponed issues involving West Ham/Chelsea/Tottenham/Arsenal and the 1985 FA Cup final with a white cover.
Got my money back and then some with the sale of about ten of them but having seen the odd one or two surface in recent years......oh hindsight - you are such a fickle beast... |

How much did the 85 white cover sell for? I've never seen one for sale anywhere. |

My dad is the butt of my jokes when it comes to buying programmss.
He rings me up when he is at a collectors fair and I constantly have to say dad that's tat, you know the usual 1980s programme marked up at £4.
I did have to kiss him though and eat humble pie, when he came over once and said, 'bought this programme, it's not in English, I haven't a clue what it is, you will probably moan at me for paying a fiver'.
Me- 'Dad, you have just bought the Greek edition of the European final between chelsea and Real Madrid!'
And we are talking about the days when it was fetching £250 plus at auction.
Have never parted with it and it has made up for all of the days when me old man came over with 'tat'.
There is always a gem out there somewhere. |

@Pablo
...probably no more than £25/£30 at the time. I had half a dozen and shot them out pretty quickly.
Did see one on ebay about six months ago with the same seller knocking out a few others of a similar ilk. His location was twixt me and the old Maybank office so, despite his denial, there was probably a connection but fair play to him - especially if he'd held out all that time!
All went for a tidy sum as you can imagine.
Initially, the 1985 FA Cup final programme was going to be produced by The Sun and was to be a newspaper issue - I kid ye not - then common sense/massive complaints won the day.
But of course, it was the first of the silly size breed and as far as I'm aware the FA had samples printed in both black and white, before eventually plumping for the former, leaving the others to be supposedly pulped. |

Don Quixote, very interesting, thanks.
Over the years I was starting to wonder if only 1 existed, in Leslie's collection. I wonder if news of multiple issues back in the 80s is new to him? |

As I said, I've no idea as to how many white issues were run off but their paucity speaks for itself.
Most of it of course, being Maybank stuff, was basic crap but I did manage to shift it all via bulk sales over the next few years.
There was the West Ham v Chelsea issue - had about ten of them - from Jan 85/86? which, when it appears fetches top dollar, plus the Tottenham v Everton FAC postponed game from 86 and another West Ham game, against Manchester United, also postponed. |

I was aware that some were sold and recently on ebay another one or two went and I missed them. I contacted the seller who told me a similar tale re the printers and he had2 left which he has given to his sons but he got £40-50 a piece so they got snapped up for buttons also.
I estimate maybe besides the copy I have there are another 10-12 or so but considering there may not have been many more as they were just "samplers" before the nod was given.
I could not hazard a guess on the real value as it opens up all those debates of no game no value or just the opposite.
What I can say is that for a long time there were only 2 copies of the 1968 European Cup Replay at Arsenal in existence and then maybe 2 years ago a 3rd popped up where the vendor had" acquired" it from Uncle Charlie or whoever and of course Uncle worked at the printers, with the commissions and everything else it was sold for over £3000 so that makes 3 off that one.
I am in the corner of if it was printed and whether or not the match took place it is one to try and obtain, others think the opposite.

I had similar hit around the same time - had nothing like it since so have paid dearly for my double whammy - when a work friend, who ironically ended up working for Maybank - put me on to a woman whose husband had just passed.
She lived in a town house near me and the middle floor was covered in boxes and folders of stuff going back to Chelsea issues from 1912.
He had a shelf going around the room which consisted of every Wisden Annual from the first issue to date but having no interest in books, I put my mate on the case and he was smiling for the next few years.
As for the programmes, said woman typed them all up and pasted the list into a scrap book. The guy who put me on them brought the book into work one evening and I had a stiffy all night just seeing the gems that were there.
Too many to list but ten Chelsea bound volumes from the 1930s, including finals and semis played at the Bridge - they were all like this.
Think I offered her a monkey and she was overjoyed.
Sold them in dribs and drabs over the years but with the way football was going at the time, nobody would have guessed the explosion that was about to happen.
Happy days! |

Talking about gems, these two items are more incredible that have have survived besides of course their value.
Slavia Prague v Manchester United May 11th and May 12th 1908.
No programmes were produced but these 2 Czech "Illustrated Revue's" the week before and the week after the games explain it all.
Unlike others these were not found for buttons but when it comes to quality items the cream always rises to the top so usually you are never going to lose out buying the good stuff.
Follow this link and click on the 5 different images-unless you can read Czech still fascinating, the rest of the pages were taken up with other football matters and sports from fencing, swimming, horse riding, ladies volley ball, athletics.

Not with a programme but with a ticket.
Bought for 25 guilders een lot of approx 200 tickets and one of them was the 69 EC Final in Madrid, sold it later on for 500 euros to a Italian collector. |

Another one was a ticket from a post season friendly between Mallorca and Man Ud, bought for 5 euros and sold for 80 pounds, to a other forum member. |
