Southport vs. Everton XI yesterday.

I could have made a better one myself on Word. To make it even worse, they've used our 'old, old' badge! Not even last season's badge... the one before that!

No more than you'd expect from a pre season I guess. Probably Everton reserves . You lucky something was printed. You're right . Anyone can print off one of these nowadays. Bit off a grey area if nothing official was produced by the club.

True. Although I'd expect something a bit better from a Conference side. I went to Southport v Everton Reserves a couple of years ago and a superb glossy programme was produced.

I'd expect something of such poor quality from a North West Counties side maybe! But as you said, we're lucky that a programme was produced at all.

Buckie Thistle (Superb) Brora Rangers (very good) both this season, typical of pre-season games in Scotland.

Same at Brora, last season was a team sheet.

Wasn't it Elgin that was only a team sheet? I have a programme from the Brora game signed by the Rangers squad.

St Mirrens effort of 91/92 is the worst programme I've ever seen

Same cover every week
Davie Hays excuses every week

Just god awful articles, typos and editing

Like the rest of the club, we just gave up that season even trying!

In my first ever 'introductory bundle' from Steve Earl, there was a York City programme from the early 1980s which was just a folded single piece of paper (folded in 4)

As this was one of my five I had been promised for sending off a load of stamps as a schoolkid, and one of my first ever programmes, I did feel somewhat cheated by it LOL!!!!!!

Would have been like this one

What a load of rubbish!!! You get better menus from your local chinese takeaway!

Obviously with the experience now of having gone to all sorts of matches for over 30 years, you understand the constraints better (and to be honest many pre-season 'programmes' are a single sheet of paper with 1 fold) but back then I thought, what rubbish!

Tis a sad tale. The club went from having its best-ever programme (1974/75) to having its worst-ever within 3 years! The one in 1977/78 was bad enough, but the 1978/79 vintage was a crushing blow to fledgling collectors such as I in those days.

The programme ran in that format for 4 miserable seasons, between 78/79 and 81/82. At least it was free (like all pamphlets are), given away at the turnstiles . I could always get a few spares too, can't think why!

As a youth of tender years in those days, I was proper giddy about the 1978 season. New kit, new owner, new badge, new image, 8 new signings ( including some curly haired winger called Neil Warnock). And then, to make me even more excited, there was a snippet in Shoot which said that the club were going to give away programmes.

I was dead excited, with fuzzy anticipation of our new programme....... until I saw it. At first we though it was a smaller effort for a LC game, until we then realised that, well, that was it, when it appeared at the first league game too!

The programme the season before in 1977/78 was also an 8 pager and only slightly less crap, but at least it was obviously just a crap programme. These looked like something you'd get from a takeaway.

Can't argue about it being shite, but I must correct Sharrowblade for decrying our trend-setting publication. There were only adverts on one side (i.e. 4 pages), so it was 50% content (if you include the cover and the rear page!).

Happy days!

Laughing

Indeed Minstermen were trend setting, For the 1st six games of Tranmeres 1984/85 season they used the a similar style 8 page fold out programme (4 full pages of adverts!) and charged 40p!

Yes..but
Do you not wish your club did an 8 or 12 page programme nowadays rather than the 80/90/100 pages which because
a) You are at the game
and/or
b) You have an unbroken run of homes/aways since before most of us were born
you just have to buy one.
If I live another 20/30 years then goodness knows where I will be keeping them all!

Indeed anything that is easier to store has to be a bonus. The weight and size of modern seasons is really annoying, but the addiction of keeping the collection going puts the loft under pressure! Every season i say i will stop collecting modern day stuff ..but it never is!

Not long ago people on the forum were saying how they wised for a simple 8 pager. I just seen a Sunderland programme from this season. The first I've really read in years. It was amazing . Bigger than an Argos catalogue ( it seemed) . Packed with information and interesting items. You couldn't complain all, but still, I'm glad I don't collect them.

I think some modern issues are excellent regardless of size, full of interesting reading and are quality productions. I for one would not want to go back to the days of 8/12 page issues with little to read.

I can say that as I don’t collect too many current season, so storage is not an issue for me although I appreciate it would be for others, I doubt I’d have the room to collect Hearts & Wimbledon home/away. I gave up collecting current season Hearts about 20 years ago and now it’s only Hibs games, Euros and Finals, and the odd game I attend.

What has annoyed me recently is the SFA reverting to A4 perfect bound issues for Scotland games, too bloody big!
