Barson was a blacksmith by trade and the likes of Roy Keane would have hid away if he came looking for him both on a football pitch or otherwise.
Barson was a nutter for sure and on top of all his bans and carrying on he laid out cold when the ref was not looking a Manchester City player in the FA Cup Semi FInal at Sheffield UNited in 1925-1926. City still won the tie and went to Wembley and BArson was reported after the game and was banned the following season for so many matches. Roy Keane hard case Frank Barson head case!

Who is that guy third from left in the back row in the United 22/23 photo? He looks like a fan who has crept into the photo for a bet.

Absolutely loved reading those, both were truly fascinating.
Thanks for posting them Steve.
"Dirty Barson" (lol) sounded a fearsome character indeed.
Certainly puts todays "hard men" into perspective, as Leslie rightly pointed out.
Must admit, this bit in that story had me roaring with laughter ...
"A year previously South Shields’ Cyril Hunter, in a Second Division match against Middlesbrough, had put in a display of such consistent brutality that by the end, according to the local paper, “the Middlesbrough dressing room was like a field ambulance station”. |

yes i have been fortunate to obtain one of those as well.
The match in which he floored the City player he was the captain of United-a fine example he set for sure, inside the official programme was an extra sheet of paper that sometimes is long gone, this was a nice touch showing Barson of United and his City countperpart, i think it was Cowan that he walloped not sure.
anyway this is that piece of paper

Does anyone know what Mr Barson did in WW1? I bet he was a bundle of laughs in the trenches. Mind you, I'm glad he was on our side! |

"A few games into it, in September 1928, during a 6-2 home defeat against Fulham, he was adjudged to have kicked Jimmy Temple and was sent off. He refused, arguing his case with the referee for a while before reluctantly trudging from the field."
The referee had a slightly different perspective on that incident. |
