I have a PDF file of the 25 page article written in 1999 by Matthew Taylor and John Coyle for "The Sports Historian" d/loaded from my University library entitled "THE ELECTION OF CLUBS TO THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE 1888-1939"

It's a fascinating read and goes into the subject in minute detail as well as covering the specific applications of many clubs.
