Post subject: New to the programme collecting world with a few questions! |
|
|
Hey guys, I'm new here and have recently taken an interest in programmes and have a couple of questions.
1) What would be the best way of starting off a collection? Looking at ones from maybe the 80's and earlier.
2) What kind of prices do people get for programmes from things like the 60's, 40's etc generally?
3) How do you guys store your programmes? Any sleeves or anything similar? Do you just leave them all in a drawer or have a special way of presenting them?
Any info appreciated thanks |

Hi Tom,
Welcome to our hobby!
My twopenny worth
1) Decide what you want to collect first!
i.e. 1 Team (break that down into everything, 1st team, reserves, youth, friendlies etc); 1st and last games (per season, per appearance in league etc); just Cup matches; internationals.............. the list goes on.
2) Prices vary tremendously!
It really depends on what you are looking to buy and who is bidding for it at auction (if your at auction or Ebay). Rarity will have a big bearing. that said, some are so common that they either don't sell, or go for very low prices! My advice: check dealers lists and keep an eye on Ebay to get an idea before jumping in. If you are a lottery winner go for everything, but if you're like most of us try and stick to a budget - sometimes very hard but if yo miss something it will inevitably turn up again. Keep your eye on this site as there is a lot of useful info and cautionary advice..............
3) I store mine in sleeves in folders - it really depends how much space you have.
4) I know that you don't have a no. 4 on your list but........most of all enjoy yourself.

Tom - do you know about the Programme shop on Borough Road (I think you are a Tranmere fan)?
They have a website too
http://www.glory-hunters.org/content/index.php
(I think it's down at the moment but if it comes back..) |

I currently store my programmes in large sandwich-type bags, in respective years. E.g. 1966-1970 in one large sandwich bag.
When I get around to it, these will then go into a folder, then into a draw.
Careful when bidding on e-bay for multiple programmes (I ignore my own advice on this :/), you will go from £20 to around £120 assuming all your bids win! |

I am indeed aware of that although I had actually forgotten it! Yeah I am a Tranmere fan. Thanks for reminding me of that shop!
Will probably be looking for Tranmere league and cup match programmes through the years and maybe the odd old programme of other teams that catch my eye.
I have had a bit of a google around looking for sleeves/holders for programmes but have had no look yet. Any info on anywhere online where these can be purchased?
Cheers! |

If you're just starting out I'd recommend sending an email to dealers setting this out and asking them to consider selling your clubs programmes in bulk and a very special rate. Most of them should appreciate the 70's to date are not worth a great deal and I'd hope they'd be happy to offload stuff at the right price.
That way you solve 2 problems. You see the good dealers who are responsive and care for collectors. They'll be the ones that reply and secondly you'll be getting vast numbers quickly with minimal postage costs. Buying single items via ebay makes them disproportionately expensive.
Enjoy . Oh and by the way be prepared to lose sleep whilst you anxiously wait to see if you've won that missing item on ebay |

Unlike most on this great site my collection consists only of progs from the career of one perticular player my all time footballing hero the late Derek Dougan (Portsmouth 57/59, Blackburn 59/61, Aston Villa 61/63, Peterborough 63/65, Leicester 65/67 & Wolves 67/75) Kettering 75/77 + Northern Ireland 58/73. . Just another option for your collecting. |

Interesting one mate, cheers for the replies... think I'm going to try for 1980's and earlier Tranmere + the odd earlier item.
Also, you guys are talking about dealers who may sell my teams programmes at lower prices... would these be shops which I can find via google or specific people etc? |

My collection revolves around Leeds Utd and Bradford Park Avenue pre 1975.
However, since 1975/76 I have concentrated on collecting the 1st and last Home programme from each season plus all cup games, play off games and any other specials like testimonials. I believe this makes for a good collection because it is not too expensive and does not create a huge storage problem. The 1st & last Home gives you all the seasons statistics in terms of results. Collecting cup games and other specials gives you a good cross section of home and away programmes including games against bigger clubs when the cup draw is kind to your club. |

Hi Tom
Welcome to the hobby.
Re your question on storage of programmes. The so-called 'sandwich bags' are better known as clear faced bags or clear fronted bags and can be easily obtained in bulk on ebay. I use these and then store the programmes in large plastic boxes/crates - these i find are generally better then cardboard boxes as they are substantially stronger.
Happy hunting

I suggest you don't start of just buying anything you can find.
Spend some time researching the period with an attemted to make list or better still a spreadsheet of the games you are mosting interested.
Then start looking ticking of each one on your list, perhaps noting the price paid and from where, also the condition so when you see the same programme again you can way up if it's worth buying as a better replacement for what you have.
Keep the system neat and tidy and that way you'll always be in touch with your collection and won't end up buying what you already have and don't need.
Good luck. |
