Paul.... not quite £2 a pop, but more a case of buying in great collections, clever trading, swap deals and alot of networking..... don't get me started on the programme side of mycollection!!!

Last count was around 1600....going back to the 40s.

Am going to try and start collecting the stewards badge from the fa cup finals...ill start with the 1925 and the 1927 if anyone has one of either of them

The numbers have really escalated over the last decade due to

- most badges being made in several different 'colourway' versions
- match badges for individual fixtures - again a badge for just one match could very easily be made in 4 different colourways

Match badges have really become common over the last 6 or 7 years. Ebay has been a real catalyst for making collecting badges widely accessible.

The reason for all the colourway variations is because most new badges these days are made 'unofficially' - in other words, not made and sold by the clubs themselves but by enterprising individuals - again, ably assisted by ebay making these specialist items widely accessible. The multiple colourways is because when having badges made up there is usually a minimum order number of 50 with many manufacturers, so by having multiple colourways, the person who has had them made would only need to sell 25 pairs of badges, as opposed to finding 50 different collectors who want them.

The beauty of ebay (for all its faults) is that sellers know they are not restricted to just selling them on a badge stall at a ground, but also they can sell them to people who may not even get to games.

There are much bigger one club collections than my 1100 or so - a Celtic fan who has a website has over 4000, and it's not uncommon for him to get 16+ different matchbadges for a single European fixture

Maybe 7 or 8 - but they are different - some of the ESCLA ones from the 70s.

Just done a quick count of Team badges, England Badges, Wolves match badges that I have listed on my Computer and I've reached a total of ........2157.
I have a box of Wolves badges, Irish, Scottish & European match badges,
FA Cup & Caring Cup Badges that I've yet to open spreadsheet for.
I would estimate there must be another 300 badges in that box!
So I reckon I must have circa. 2500.

Not bad for someone that bought his first badge on ebay in February 2009.

Currently have 734 Newport County badges and 5 sew-on-patch badges.

And a few hundred £ better off which has gone towards funding the programme collection.
