What's happening with my computer? Assistance needed.....

Some of you will have received my e list a few weeks back, and it has been saved in it's original format ever since then. A short while ago all the £ signs next to individual items had changed into a backward L shape without me having done anything to it.
Due to the large amount of items affected like this I had to put an extra piece in my intro about the gremlin's work rather than painstakingly having to change thousands of individual entries, so that new purchasers of the list would understand.
Yesterday when I went to open the list, and add further items, all the backward L shapes had now magically turned into (?) question marks! WTF is going on?
I added some more items to the list and saved them, but when I went in today to do some more work all the £ signs I'd entered yesterday on the new items had now changed into the backward L shapes again! So now I have a list that is a mixture of question marks and backward L shapes where the pound signs (£) should be, and am tearing my hair out trying to understand what's going on.
ANY HELP WOULD BE MOST GRATEFULLY ACCEPTED BEFORE I SHOOT THE COMPUTER.
