i think we have all made an error of judgement in the past, be it unintentionally paying way over the odds for something or overlooking an opportunity and regretting it big time later.

My biggest ever 'goof' concerned the offers system that was the norm for nearly everybody that advertised in Programme Monthly many moons ago.

It was around the mid/late 80s and i was just starting out on 'Cup Finals' adventure. The FA Amateur Cup Final of 1963 between Sutton Utd and Wimbledon was on a dealers offers list inside programme monthlys advertising section.

For some reason I was under the impression that with Wimbledon now being a league club, that this programme must be rare and I bid an astonishing £32............yes.....thirty two pounds...........(your all laughing now I bet)

Obviously i won the item, how close was the nearest bid, only the dealer will ever know that. it was only a while afterwards that I realised that I paid a totally over the top price for a item that was only worth probably a fiver (at the time) at most.

I always think about that now, and I think what the dealer thought about the offer. Did he at first think it was a mistake and would contact me, or did he think, 'Wow' an unexpected windfall here. How admirable it would have been of the dealer to have sent me the the success note for the offer with an accompanying note saying that he couldnt possibly sell me a common programme for such a high amount!

I suppose some sellers trade of the ignorance/inexperience of some collectors in the hobby. A big learning curve for me......anybody else with any stories like this.....come on....own up! Wink

In my one and only trip to the London programme fair in the early1980's I bought a single sheet Gloucestershire cup final (Bristol City v Bristol Rovers 1960) programme for £1.50. I didnt want to hang about at the fair for long as I think I was either going to a match or meeting a girl.

As it was a single sheet I could quite easily stuff it in my pocket. On the train back home I noticed on the back of the programme was marked 15p - yes. nice one dealer! This has irritated me for the best part of 30 odd years - that is until I saw one sold on ebay last year for a hundred quid!

regards, Mark
