OK 2 things: Firstly, would it not benefit the auctioneer and potential buyers if these auctions were on a Saturday when people arent at work, or am I missing something??

Secondly, I have never used auctions and would like to bid on 2 items in this catalogue, what would be the best way for me to do it?

Saturday would be the worse possible day for an auction like this, most programme collectors are watching football on Saturdays.

I guess, its down to availability and cost. Saturday auctions would clash with the football and thus lowering the audiences that may attend, whilst the venue would need to be altered owing to Northampton RFC playing their home games at Franklin's Gardens.
You have a few options here for bidding 1) attend in person 2) ring Chris, give him your details and they will ring you just before your lot comes available 3) leave a commission bid 4) log onto www.the-salesroom.com and place a bid via the tinternet ( just be mindful that the latter increases your purchasing price as a % is added for the convenience.
Hope this helps - Scott

Auction days are hard to plan. We would love to have our auctions on a Sunday or Bank holiday Monday but which ever day we pencil in there is always some kind of problem mainly down to cost of venue. Our venue is used for weddings etc so weekends are a no no for us, and before you say why not change venue, ours is one of the best venue around and at an affordable price for week days.

Telephone and commision bids are the best way forward for making an absentee bid.

Anyone succesful on bids? looks like I was with one of my bids (I had placed two), first time I have placed commission bids at an auction.

Do they generally email to inform you and then send an invoice?

They'll invoice you, but you can ring Chris if you want and square up prior to that if you want them earlier

Cheers John.

Given it was a commission bid via email, will they email to inform me that I have won the lot, or is it best to drop them an email to confirm?

Not in a rush for the programme, just want to confirm I've won the lot Thumbs Up

I put commission bids in all the time, and Chris normally posts an invoice out, but also sends a confirmation email.

What time did this finally end?

I was online from 11am to 19.30 and there were about 450 lots still to go.

I noticed that they had a particularly good collection of Brentford home and aways. Here are the top six Brentford hammer prices.

1. Brentford home programme v Thames Association, 7/5/1932, last-ever Football League game to be played by Thames, fold and the staple has been removed, however it has no writing and is in generally good condition. As described. £1,050

2. Scarce Chelsea single sheet programme for the London Cup Final, Brentford v Reading, 7/6/41 at Stamford Bridge, minor folds, no writing. Generally good £640

3. Brentford home programme v Tottenham, 7/1/1922, FA Cup, four page programme + four page Daily Chronicle insert, slight fold. Good £510

4. Brentford Scarce home single sheet issue v Charlton, 3/9/1928, small hole along one side, slight ageing. Fair-generally good £480

5. Brentford Home programme double issue, v Southend 27/12/27 and v Brighton 31/12/27, includes team sheet insert for the Brighton game, slight fold. The Southend game was postponed. Good £460

6. Single sheet Brentford home programme v Tottenham, 9/11/1918, London wartime Combination, slight fold and very small ink mark Generally good £440

Expensive half dozen especially when you add commission and VAT.
Who’s collection was this and who was buying???

I do not recall his name but one of the top Brentford collectors has passed away recently in his mid fifties, the buyers were in general other Brentford collectors.

That's terrible, young to have passed away, thoughts go out to the family, and hopefully the money raised from the sale of his collection will be of some small comfort to them.

Apparently the programmes were part of the David Harrison collection, Chairman of Brentford FC Programme Collectors Club. I have been told David had an extensive collection including, unusually, many duplicates so if you missed out this time they may be listed again. It is tragic news that he passed away unexpectedly and at a young age. I didn’t know David but my thoughts are with David’s family and friends.
