I note that the editor is again banging on about current season programme prices, hard on the heels of his other bug bear, namely Scotland current season away programmes and the prices being asked. He has a point to a certain extent.

The only current season programmes I collect are;

1. Scotland home and aways (I'm almost always at the games anyway)
2. Edinburgh derby
3. Junior clubs in the Scottish Cup (always get these from Almondvale Programmes who offer a great service).
4. AFC Wimbledon occasionally

So I don't really notice the premiums being charged, however....

In the case of number three above, I have been to four games in the Scottish Cup this season and bought a spare(s) to sell on ebay, the prices realised were (cover price in brackets);

Beith v Linlithgow Rose (£2) - £3.76
Bo'ness United v Queens Park (£2) - £8.08
Girvan v Huntly (£1) - £2.76
Ayr United v Sunnybank (£2) - £10.50 and £10.05

The Bo'ness and Ayr issues knocked me over, particularly the Ayr issue which I'm assuming is hard to get hold of? I bought 4 issues at the game and when I got home I found I had been given 5 by mistake, so I had two to go on ebay, although the second copy I sold through second chance offer.

Anyway, the point of this ramble is this, do dealers deserve criticism for selling a programme with a cover price of £3 for say £5? or an international away programme with a cover price of £2 for say £8? Given the prices realised maybe they are asking a fair price? I don't class any of those 4 programmes listed above as anything other than "run of the mill" non-league in the cup issues although apppreciate they may be a bit harder to get hold of than your Rangers or Man Utd's.

Hi TT.
My feelings are that whatever price a dealer charges it is fair.
If a buyer thinks the dealer is asking too much then they have the answer. Don't buy it.
In any buisiness prices will be set to try and get the maximum money without going overboard and turning customers away and I don't see why programme dealers should be any different.
Of course when I want to buy one I still wish the prices were less.

Cheers, Jamie.

Thanks for rescuing the thread from oblivion Jamie Thumbs Up

When does making a reasonable profit become ripping the pish? 50%? 100%? 200% mark up?

Well like I said, if the price is too high then people just have to not buy from that dealer. It's hard I know when they have that issue you're desperate to own and I know I have been there many times. I just think to myself I can't afford it but hey ho it may come up for sale another time. In the end I am never going to finish my collection so I just give up if the price is too high and look for something else.
