Why on earth would anybody want to bid on an item that the vendor can knock out at any time? To my mind it's ridiculous. If people didn't bid the vendor would have to sell them at a realistic set price. It's an absolute no brainer.....

I have always wondered this. There is a very rare cd that I would love to have in my collection but as there are only 1000 ever made I know I am never going to get one. There are plenty of good quaility copies out there, but they always go for silly money. As you have said above if people did not bid then sellers would be forced to bring prices down. Why people pay £20+ for a copied cd Ill never understand! Slightly off programmes, but still the same principle.

If you feel that £17 is a fair price then go for it, and fair play to you mate. My son always says to me when I ask these kind of questions that its my collection so I should do what I think is right as there is no right or wrong answer. I possibly would consider a replica for a very rare programme, but i haven't yet, and then i wouldn't pay above a couple of pound for it.
I understand where Paulo and Auchin are coming from, and for thir own collections they are makingg their own decisions, but as I said above it's your collection so go with your own instincts as to whether you think its worth it or not.

I'm not deriding you for wanting to plug a gap with a copy, far from it. What I am doing is pointing out the very basic law of supply and demand. People are very clever with the way they describe things. If you buy a copy of a rare programme you are not buying a rare programme.

That being the case, why would you want to pay £20 for something that can be copied any time the vendor so chooses? It's only a copy, it's not rare, and you'll be paying a vastly inflated price for something that quite clearly isn't worth it. If people did not bid for copies - and for the life of me I still can't understand why they would want to - the vendor would need to sell them at a set price if he wanted to keep milking the golden cow.

Analogy - wines from a great vintage command great prices. The following year's crop might not be just as good, but they can't describe it as a vintage because it doesn't come up to the mark, so it's a bog standard wine. It's not passed off as "almost a great vintage" The occasional vintage keeps the wine market happy. The same applies with art and reproductions - why would football programmes be any different?

Buy your copy by all means, but don't keep an artificially created market artificially high by bidding for it.

I'm with Auchinleckian on this one.Why anyone would want to pay this kind of money for replicas of football programmes is beyond me. However, Being in the antiques trade, we get many copies of antique maps, paintings etc, but the prices fetch a very tiny percent of the originals.People are prepared to pay good money for these though because they can be framed and displayed and good copies are very difficult to distinquish from the originals.

By the way, I've got no problems with this guy making money off ebay selling copies, supply and demand etc. However, it's obvious that his listings are carefully worded with no mention of it being a replica on the main heading and therefore deceiving some purchasers who think they're getting the real thing. Very naughty!
