As we all know that only 3 League matches were played by all clubs and 3 reserve games too, but how many Public Practice matches were played and this post is to try and see if anyone on here has anything at all, if you do not want to post an image fair enough but you can just give details re the date and any other info, but a picture tells a 1000 words.

Until very recently i was not even aware that MUFC had played a Public Practice match and then one appears. Click on an image to reveal a lot of the background to the 4 teams United put out that day.

Some of us(NOT all) know that some(NOT all) clubs played more than three games.
For example Ipswich Town played Norwich City in the Football League Jubilee Fund match on 19th August 1939.

There were six West Ham home programmes issued before Britain entered the war on 3rd September

1 12/08/1939 Reds v Blues Practice Match
2 17/08/1939 Reds v Blues Practice Match
.. 19/08/1939 Fulham Football League Jubilee Benevolent Fund
3 26/08/1939 Luton Town Res Football Combination
4 28/08/1939 Fulham Football League
5 02/09/1939 Leicester City Football League

The Fulham programme was one of the "Jubilee" issues

QPR hosted Northampton Town on the same date for the same Football League Jubilee Fund.

There were probably some practice matches as well prior to that but I have not seen anything on that yet.

Thanks all so far but my question was only about the Public Practise matches, I am aware lot of clubs played in the Jubilee games but that is a separate subject.

I was referring to how common a situation was it to play practice matches pre season in that 1939-40 season and I am interested to know which clubs did.
. Thumbs Up

There was the usual pre-season Reds v Whites practice match at Ayresome Park on 12.08.39, which in effect was the 1st team v the Reserves. No known progamme was issued. A quiet affair led to first team winning 12-6 with George Camsell notching 7 goals. Defensively, it didn’t bode well for either team in the upcoming season.

Some other games played 12.08.39 were:

At Birmingham; Blues 5 v 2 Whites
At WBA; Whites 1 v 2 Stripes
At Coventry; Stripes 6 v 5 Reds
At Walsall; Claret & Blues 3 v 2 Blues
At Arsenal; Reds 3 v 3 Whites
At Fulham; Whites 7 v 3 Whites
At Tottenham; Whites 4 v 2 Stripes
At Luton; Whites 7 v 5 Reds
At Derby; Whites 4 v 0 Stripes
At Doncaster; Probables 4 v 1 Possibles
At Crystal Palace; Blues 4 v 3 Whites

...and covering that trial at Man Utd

Then they played Bristol C**y at home on the 19th of August. (Football League Jubilee Match)

I do not have the programme, but it is up on Sportingold (Lot 1120)

12 Aug 1939 - Hoops v Reds

It also mentions a second Practice Match on Thursday 17 Aug 1939. So, assume that was also Hoops v Reds, which is what it was the Thursday game (18 Aug 1938) the year before.

I wish I had a programme image to share!

Arsenal played two public practice matches:

12 August 1939
Reds 3 Whites 3

16 August 1939
Reds 4 Whites 2

Reg Lewis scored all seven of the Reds goals! But for the war he would be talked about in the same terms as Cliff Bastin, Alex James, Ted Drake and Eddie Hapgood.
