Saturday 24th April 1954
Division III South
Gillingham 3 Crystal Palace 2 (Morton, Thomas)
Gate: 8,729
A close game to end Palace's away days in this season in which they finished 22nd of 24 while Gills fared a bit better and ended in 10th, though only 8 points above Palace (48 v 40). They did the double over Palace.
At #9 on the Glaziers line-up, concealed by the rs (removed) is the name K (Keith) Morton, who scored here and of whom I had never heard before. He was an amateur at the time, but played the last 5 games of this season and scored 3 times. Checking him out, he was born in either Ferryhill or Consett, depending on source, in 1934, and after this brief spell at Palace returned home to Co Durham to join Sunderland for the 54/5 season, though he never played at all for the Wearsiders. But then in 1955 he signed for Darlington and played for 6 years there, appearing in over 170 games and scoring about 50 times (again, depending on source). His brief stint at Palace probably meant he avoided having his photo taken, so I'm wondering if any Sunderland or Darlington fans might have an image of him? He retired in 1961, aged just 27. I'd be very grateful if someone could fill this void for me. Thank you. |

You wouldn't put your money on anything with 3 horse shoes!
Saturday 25th April 1959
Division IV
Darlington 1 Crystal Palace 4 (Byrne, Deakin, Colfar, Summersby)
Gate: 2,643
A real rarity inside a 1959 Div 4 programme....
So Palace ended their away matches in the inaugural season in Div 4 with a thumping win at Feethams, but it wasn't enough to lift Palace to the promotion places, as they finished 7th, 10 points and 9 places ahead of their hosts. Interestingly, mention is made in the Club Jottings of Keith Morton, whom I was talking about on here yesterday, he was one of two on Darlo's long-term injury list. |

25th April, 1973
European Cup S/F 2nd leg
Derby County 0 Juventus 0
att: 35,350
Juve won 3-1 on aggregate and went through to meet Ajax in the Final. Enough has been written about the shenanigans with the refereeing and general underhand tactics from the Italians so no need for me to add anything further!
25th April 1979
Metropolitan Police v Bromley
Mid-table battle in the Isthmian Lge 1st division which saw Harlow Town and Harrow Borough promoted to the Premier Division.
25th April, 1987
Penhill v Abingdon Town
Mid-table Penhill changed their name to Swindon Athletic a year later and eventually merged with another club to become the Swindon Supermarine who currently play in the Southern League.
Abingdon Town won the Hellenic League in this particular season but appear to have fallen on hard times somewhat. They made the news 18 months ago when, 0-8 down at half-time to local rivals Abingdon United, the team decided they weren't up for another 45 minutes of humiliation and duly got dressed and left the ground leaving a couple of hundred spectators (and the referee) somewhat bemused.....highlights of those 45 minutes are on YouTube.

Saturday 26th April 1947
Benefit Match
Torquay United v RFC Malinois (Belgium)
For the Benefit match for Torquay's stonewall defender Bert Head, United (then the "Magpies") hosted the 1946 Belgian champions, who in the Flemish version of their name are better known as KV Mechelen. Up front they had Albert De Cleyn who hit 7 goals in 5 games for Belgium and 40 goals in the 45/6 championship season - and he'd be up against Bert in this game. I have no idea of the outcome.
Mr Head stayed at Torquay until Feb 1952, having played 222 league games for the Magpies in his 16 calendar years at the club - he joined Bury and played just 22 games there before moving upstairs as assistant manager, a role he carried out for about 3 years before he started a 9 year term as manager at Swindon, where he gave league starts to the likes of Mike Summerbee, Ernie Hunt, Bobby Woodruff and Don Rogers. For some reason he then went back to Bury in 1965 but within a year he'd been poached by Palace and he transformed the Glaziers into a 1st Division outfit within 3 years. For that, he was idolised at Selhurst Park, until his passing in 2002 at the age of 86. RIP, Sir Bert. |

25th April, 1926
Chelsea 2 Derby County 1 (Bedford)
att: 9,335
Penultimate game of the season, Derby already promoted as runners-up to Sheff Weds, Chelsea finished third, 5 points adrift.
I presume the low attendance was due to the fact it was a Monday fixture.
26th April, 1986
Cambridgeshire County Lge
Cherry Hinton v Pye

Saturday 27th April 1957
Division III South
Walsall 1 Crystal Palace 2 (Deakin, Murray)
Gate: 9,748
Mike Deakin scored his 8th goal in 8 games to play a major part in Palace's successful avoidance of the re-election committee. A Birmingham boy, signed from Bromsgrove Rovers, he probably had it in for Walsall anyway!
So Palace finished 20th on 40 points, and the Saddlers were 15th just 4 points ahead. And for those in East Anglia, Ipswich were champions while Norwich won the spoon. |

27th April, 1946
The one and only time Derby have lifted the Cup.
Sad to see that the club's Facebook posting today to commemorate this was full of comments such as "so what?" and "stop living in the past".
On the same day - and not too far from Wembley - a Spartan League fixture between Pinner and Ware.
10 clubs in the Central Division - Pinner would finish 2nd, Ware would finish 8th.

Thursday 28th April 1949
Grand Football Match
Ronnie Rooke's XI (aka "Arsenal") 3 Tommy Lawton's XI 2
There were 3 of these "Grand Football Matches" on behalf of the Sir Philip Game Boys' Club, played between this date in 1949 and April 1952. This was the first and Tommy Lawton and Ronnie Rooke got the sides up. Rooke, then still an Arsenal player - he was transferred to Palace a month or so later in June - fielded 10 Arsenal players and there were 2 or 3 more in Lawton's XI, which was more of a mixture. Perhaps not surprisingly, Rooke's XI seem to have won 3-2 with Ronnie himself (2) and Logie grabbing the goals. |

28 April 1934
Division 3 South
Crystal Palace 4 (Albert Dawes (3) and Arthur Crompton) - QPR 1 (Blackman)
Att: 7,777
I promised Pete I would upload this lovely item between our clubs.
This was a poor result for QPR in the second last match of the season as the resultant was that they finished fourth instead of second. Norwich City were the easy victors and promoted to Division 2.
Jack Blackman, the scorer for QPR, was signed from Weston United and played 120 games, netting 71 goals. The centre-forward, in October 1935, of all things, signed for Palace.

Derby,, interesting to read that there was comments from Derby fans on Facebook , ‘ stop living in the past ‘ and all that stuff, relating to the clubs only F A Cup success. I think we all live in the past to a large extent. This quote from Tennessee Williams probably sums it up: “ Has it ever struck you that life is all memory, except for the present fleeting moment which you quickly forget”. |

Jack Blackman was a great signing for Palace, he played pre- and post-war (107 games, 55 goals) and later became trainer through the 1950's. |

Well, although the time lag is infinitesimal, anything that we look at is already as it was "in the past" due to the time it takes light to reflect off the subject we are looking at, enter thru our optic nerve and register in our consciousness.
So, folks, that goal you see your team score? By the time you register it, it's already happened and is part of history. Even as you (think) you're watching it.....!! _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/derby1884/sets/ |

28th April, 1969
Coventry City 1 Derby County 1
By this time, having won the 2nd Division and with Brian Clough starting to gather national media attention, Derby were somewhat in demand and so they agreed to the invitation to provide the opposition for Brian Hill's testimonial match. Hill, a defender, joined Coventry in 1957 and ended up playing almost 250 games for the club.
28th April, 1959
Redhill v Wealdstone.
Hastily compiled single sheet for this rearranged Athenian League fixture.
Redhill would finish at the foot of the table with Wealdstone losing out on goal average to Barnet for the title.
Given how important this match seems to have been for the visitors, I always wondered what the score was - anyone know?

Saturday 29th April 1944
Football League - South
Aldershot 0 Crystal Palace 6 (Robson, Wilson, Ferrier 2, A Dawes, Smith)
Gate: c 5000
The penultimate match of the 30 in this truncated season saw Palace stroll to a comfortable win over a Shots side fielding at least 9 guest players. The Palace side was more settled with possibly just one guest, centre forward R Ferrier who hit 2 of the goals. I've researched him as best I can and think he is Ron Ferrier, a Manchester United player of the 1930's, who joined Oldham and played for them in the late 30's and in the early years of the war, then Palace for this season (19 goals in 25 games) and then Oldham late WW2 and briefly after. From there he became coach at Grimsby in about 1947. Can anyone confirm this is the same player please?
Incidentally, Aldershot's "Queen of Beauty" Phyllis Dixey was appearing locally soon after this game. I checked her out and I would imagine she was pretty popular among the men at the time. She is worth a Google! |
