Saturday 1st April 1950

Division III South

Northampton Town 2 Crystal Palace 2 (Rooke 2)

Gate: 10,277

Honours even but it was an important point lost for the Cobblers who were chasing free-spending Notts County but ended up as runners-up, 7 points behind. 7 points further back, in 7th place, came Palace under goal-scoring player-manager Ronnie Rooke, as they completed the season with 2 wins and 6 draws from the last 9 games. It all looked good at that point. But of course, it didn't last.

1st April. 1939

Derby County 1 (McCulloch) Leeds United 0

att: 11,278

A low gate for this one but it had been a strange season at the Baseball Ground. The club had been alternating with Everton for top spot up till about Christmas then the form slumped a bit and so did the attendances...a lot By 40-50%. Of course, it's possible that people had matters other than a game of football on their mind at this time.....

1st April, 1972

Northern Premier League

Bradford (Park Avenue) 0 Wigan Athletic 0

att: 1,489

Two clubs moving in very different directions indeed. Avenue would finish the season 18th, Wigan in 3rd just behind Boston United and eventual champions Stafford Rangers.

Saturday 2nd April 1966

Division II

Norwich City 2 Crystal Palace 1 (Sewell)

Gate: 11,215

A lovely programme cover from the Canaries. Not much to separate these 2 sides, Palace finishing 11th and City 13th, just two points behind.

John Sewell scored his first goal for Palace of the 9 he gathered in his 250+ games - most of the others being penalties. That is, apart from the sliced lob that Gary Sprake threw into the net, but that's for another day. Known as "Duke" in the dressing room, and "Shovel" on the terraces, and rarely in trouble with referees - a model pro. And later captain of the 68/9 promotion side and for 2 years in the 1st Division.

Large s/s folded vertically. The home side (who groundshared with fellow Isthmian League club Tufnell Park) weren't to know it but this was their penultimate season as they folded once war broke out and they never reformed.

2nd April, 1949

Middlesbrough 1 Derby County 0

(Easter) Monday 3rd April 1961

Division IV

Millwall 0 Crystal Palace 2 (Heckman, Barnett)

Gate: 15,748

On Good Friday these 2 sides met at Selhurst (in front of 37,774, a divisional record) and the result was the reverse of today's, and was Palace's fourth consecutive defeat - throwing into jeopardy their chances of emerging as champions. But they recovered from that dismal run to beat Oldham on Saturday and now they won at their near-neighbours on the Monday, and their thrust was back at full steam.

Up front for Millwall, with at least 31 goals under his belt was my first Palace hero, Peter Burridge (still with us, still golfing, at 87). Palace signed him in summer 1962 when manager Arthur Rowe went to watch him playing cricket and at tea, offered to double his wages if he'd sign for Palace. Which he did! This is a signed clip of Pete in Millwall kit (one for Fishy).

Millwall - 87 games, 58 goals (league only)
Palace - 124 games, 49 goals (all comps)

Saturday 4th April 1964

Division III

Hull City 1 Crystal Palace 1 (Holton, pen)

Gate: 6,602

Palace were top of the league at this point, but ended the season with 5 draws and 2 losses in the last 7 games so were pipped at the post for the title by Coventry. Hull were 8th.

The Facts & Figures reveal some amazingly low gates at Hull, including some in the 3000s, just a few weeks after attracting 36000 for a Cup game v Everton. Not that I've made an exhaustive check on this, but it's hard to imagine a bigger gap between top and bottom gates in the course of a season.

4/4/70 FA Trophy Semi Final
Barnet 0 Macclesfield 1
Played at The Victoria Ground, Stoke City.
The first season of the FA Trophy would see Macclesfield win it after beating Telford in the Final.

4/4/90 Worcs Senior Cup Semi Final
Stourbridge v Kidderminster
I don't know the score, but Kiddy obviously won as they lifted the Trophy.

Scottish League
1st Division
4th April 1959

Stirling Albion v Dunfermline Athletic

The game ended 1-1 and the season would finish with Albion 12th in the table. To date, this is the highest league position the Albion have ever achieved in the Scottish League. The next season would bring relegation....again!
