Saturday 27th March 1954

Division III South

Torquay United 1 Crystal Palace 0

Gate: 5,662

At the time of the game, Torquay were 9th and Palace were (according to "The Traveller" in the programme), "lying snugly in the middle of the table" (ie 14th). After this narrow defeat, the Gulls slipped a bit to finish 13th while Palace caved in, failing to win any more games, and ended up in 22nd place. The writing was on the wall for manager Laurie Scott, who survived until October.

Every page in the prog, apart from the cover, has adverts, about a third of which stated "No reasonable offer refused for this advertising space". They could have reduced the 12pp to 8pp and nothing would have been lost.

Saturday 28th March 1959

Division IV

Gillingham 1 Crystal Palace 1 (Byrne)

Gate: 8,714

Not much to choose between these 2 sides, though Palace had won 4-1 at Selhurst earlier on. Gills ended up 11th on 49 points and Palace were 7th but only 3 points ahead and 6 from the fourth promotion place, which was their aim. Though they scored 90 goals, more than two of the promoted sides, their defence was porous and away from home in particular was poor.

Scottish League
Division 1
28th March 1981

Stirling Albion v Clydebank

After several seasons in the 70s where, in my opinion, the Albion programme front page was bland with no indication of date or opponent, we were treated to these issues with action photos on the front. A lot more interesting to look at and a lot easier to file!

Probably more interesting than the game as well which ended goaless.

Edited to add that it is always nice to see photo's of old Annfield as well.

28th March, 1931

West Ham 0 Derby County 1 (Randall)

att: 16,658

Hammers issues of the time normally printed on blue paper but this one on glossier white paper. I think this means it was for those in the expensive seats?

28th March, 1932

Derby County 1 (Alderman) Arsenal 1 (Jack)

att: 25,790

Costly point dropped by Arsenal who would finish the season 2 points behind champions Everton.

Saturday 29th March 1947

Division III South

Cardiff City 0 Crystal Palace 0

Gate: 24,214

According to the Editor's blurb on the back, City were anticipating a home victory. Palace disappointed and clung on to a point. Didn't stop Cardiff racing away with the league title, though, with 66 points they were nine points clear of QPR in second. Palace were 18th, roughly par for the course in the post-war era.

Scottish Reserve League West

Stirling Albion v Albion Rovers

Wee bit different today as we go with the reserves to mark the last ever match at Annfield Park.

Record books will show it was a first team match against Clydebank the year before......but now you know!

London League Cup Semi-Final

Crittall Athletic v Eton Manor (score unknown)

29th March, 1969

Aston Villa 0 Derby County 1 (Simmons og)

With Derby on course for the title and Villa fighting off relegation, quite a crowd in attendance for this vital match.

Friday 30th March 1962

Division III

Grimsby Town 0 Crystal Palace 0

Gate: 12,535

Grimsby ended this season on fire with 9 wins and a draw from their last 11 games to seal promotion as runners-up behind Pompey, while Palace drew six and won none of their last 13 games to slide down to 15th. That this game ended level was therefore totally out of context.

Never seen this kind of thing in a programme before - a street map of Cleethorpes. Maybe it gave Palace a clue as to where to park the bus.
